  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been here a little longer than you have.
Anyone who says the Bible describes a flat earth doesn't know general relativity.
Or if they do, they're willing to set it aside to ridicule the Bible.

There you go again, trying to move the goalposts by not addressing the questions.

Yes. You made a nonsensical, unattributed statement. Back it up.

I was asking you to back up your comment about scientists. You've ducked twice. Are you...
  • going to ignore this post
  • duck yet again with another comment like "does it matter"
  • duck yet again by declaring your self perceived superiority with irrelevance like "I've been here a little longer than you have".
Alternatively you could just tell which "scientists are willing to set general relativity aside in an attempt to sterilize a passage of the Scriptures".

What scientists?
I'm not going to go back over nine and a half years of posts and dig out every scientist (or scientific methodist) who has ever adamantly interpreted the Bible as saying the earth is flat.

The "scientists" AV is talking about are actually Biblical literalists who take the Bible rather more literally than he does.
Yes.

As we're fond of saying:

If the Devil can't get you to step on the breaks, he will get you to hit the gas.

So now it's a "scientist (or scientific methodist)". I just googled "scientific methodist" and didn't find anything.

It's just a phrase you made up. Just like you made up:
"...scientists are willing to set general relativity aside in an attempt to sterilize a passage of the Scriptures..."

How pathetic.

Yeah, common sense tells us the earth is flat. Silly common sense.
Well, for all people, in most all practical applications, it is.
Now, if the world was 50 feet in diameter, my argument would be hard to make.
Anybody who walked 50 feet from somebody would be upside down from the other person.
This would have many practical indications. But with the earth the size it is, the curve of the earth
is almost impossible to perceive by 99 percent of the population.

It does look creepy.
Perhaps a church should publish this, officially:

{I define "scientific methodists"}

Do you really expect me to remember every silly thing you post? Especially when you make up your own words and definitions. Especially when it was in a post addressed to someone else?

In any case, in your quote that started this exchange you didn't use "scientific methodists", you used scientists.

And when it gets to the point where scientists are willing to set general relativity aside in an attempt to sterilize a passage of the Scriptures, you know the return of the LORD is very near.
Your response "I take it you missed this?" is even more pathetic than your last response.

I would ask you to personally measure the difference for me.
Take as long as you need.

"There is overwhelming evidence that the Earth is round. Why then do we perceive it as flat? The answer is that the Earth's diameter is several million times larger than the height of an average human. While standing on the ground or even in a tall building, we're unable to see the curvature of the Earth's surface because it is so gradual from our perspective. That's why we must go to very high altitudes, and even space, before we can tell that our planet is spherical. Think of placing an ant on an orange. The ant, if it were intelligent, would certainly notice that its world was curved. Now place the ant on a giant beach ball. It could probably tell it occupied a curved world, but it would be somewhat harder for it to tell. Finally, place the same ant on the roof of the SkyDome (when its closed). The ant would now not be able to tell its world was curved at all; it would seem like its world was flat, yet we know differently. The same principle applies to us. Like the ant, the ball on which we live is much too large for us to detect its curvature"

Feel free to read the rest on this link: http://resources.yesican-science.ca/lpdd/g06/lp/unit2.html

To suggest the earth is flat is complete, utter nonsense.

Yes, that's a valid point. Most readers of the scriptures would perceive the earth as flat.
And nearly 100% of the population today as well. If the Bible were a guide
for space travel it wouldn't help with creating orbit plans.

Are you suggesting the earth is flat because it feels like it is? Despite the evidence that says you're wrong?

I'm not wrong. The deviation from flat is .01 %.
If I create a sidewalk from your frontdoor that is two miles long
the step at your door will be raised over 9 inches at your door, and
over 9 inches at the other end. You would prefer the curved one
and call that one flat to make it easier to roller skate back home.
You would consider the curved one to be more flat.
The flat one would seem curved up on each end.

Drop marbles on each and decide which is flat.

You clearly didn't read the link provided to you or read/comprehend the portion of the link in my previous post. The earth is not flat and it's not up for debate.
