  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

OK Sir, let me check this out. At work at the mo, but will come back to you shortly. Enjoying the conversation

Makes absolutely no sense. Why have a flat disc orbited by a spherical object? Why would the moon have formed as a globe but not the Earth? What about the other planets? How would a globe orbit a disc?

This took me literally 5 seconds on google. You should try it sometime. There is tons more out there is you want it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spherical_Earth
http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae535.cfm
http://www.smarterthanthat.com/astronomy/top-10-ways-to-know-the-earth-is-not-flat/

Science is about questions! The fact that science changes its views is its strength - as new evidence is found and discoveries made, theories have to be changed in light of this new evidence. If science didn't chance we wouldn't be able to have this conversation via the internet using computers. We'd be living medieval lives. It's religion that uses unchanging dogma.

You clearly don't understand how science actually works. I don't mean this in a nasty way - just an honest observation.

So you believe the Earth doesn't orbit the Sun? Doesn't spin?

About different speeds at different latitudes - that's obvious. Get a ball and put two dots on it - one at the equator and one near the top - connected by a vertical line. Now rotate the ball. See what happens? In a single revolution of the ball the two dots take exactly the same time to come back to face you but they've travelled very different distances. The dot at the equator has had to travel much further than the one near the pole (all of the circumferance rather than a small part of it) and therefore had to travel much further. Speed = Distance / Time so therefore if time is the same for the two dots and distance is different, the speeds much be different.

Evidence for this wider acceptance in the last 50 years, please.

How do you think explorers such as Francis Drake and Christopher Columbus were able to sail away confident that they wouldn't fall off the edge of the Earth? To the people back in Europe they disappear over the horizon but because they knew the Earth was a globe didn't think they were going to fall off the edge.

Mentioning that, why do you think ships disappear over the horizon? Doesn't make any sense in a flat Earth.

In reply to your post about a flat earth and a round moon, not making sense, Sir, not wishing to be flippant, however in a previous post you said common sense has nothing to do with reality. Be that as it may, I think there are times when it does and are times when it does not.

You are quite correct, I’m not a Scientist so it would be difficult to debate you on this, but am happy to listen to your scientific views and am genuinely open to correction, unfortunately most people are not with regard to science. Science however should follow logic and common sense and if correct should not be difficult to explain to a simple reasonably intelligent man like myself.

I am not denigrating science, it does however have its limits and yes it is great that we can communicate through science in this way. However I must disagree with you that science changing is a strength. Science has been around thousands of years and has changed in that time. Religion has also changed it views to some extent of late, especially with regard to marriage, but that’s another debate for another day. Religion is certainly weakened when it can change from day to day. I view science the same way and that’s why I can’t always take science seriously

To go back to a point about wider acceptance of a globe earth and the evidence. It is my understanding that in the early part of the century the globe earth was more openly questioned and those that questioned it were not subject to ridicule. The globe earth theory became more prevalent after the moon landings in the late 1960's roughly 50 years ago.

Your link to globe earth – I read all of this and the evidence no doubt is good. I am however not convinced. It’s a good solid article but it has not convinced me

Edge of the earth – a flat earth does not necessitate an edge. The bible talks about a firmament which is a dome like structure that would encompass the earth like an upside down fish bowl . There is more chance of falling off the edge in a globe earth than with the flat earth theory I am suggesting.

Why do ships disappear over the horizon? not 100% sure to be honest. I suspect that the eye has it limits past a certain range/distance

Your point about the two dots on the ball is a fair point. I however do not believe the earth is spinning or moving at the speed science says it is

Finally – if the earth is spinning, a plane travelling in the direction of the spin would take longer to reach its destination and a plane travelling in the opposition direction to spin would reach its destination quicker?

Because the sky has been described as a dome, it's not that hard to imagine that the earth
beneath it is domed as well. Especially since the scriptures come pretty close with "Disk."

If you combine chûgh with the Greek gýros you get the idea of a
spinning circle. This can spin two ways, like a CD spins normally
or like it would spin on a fishing line to annoy birds away from your
garden (my favorite use).

scare-away-birds-old-cds-800x800.jpg

This spin would give you a globe shape.

The scriptures say that in the beginning was water. You can observe
how water acts with any faucet.

Is this for real?

Arguing about whether the Earth is flat?

SMH.
arguing...while using communication systems that utilize satellites orbiting the earth. I suggest the next time you travel, take a plane and then look out a window.

Of course not. That is idiotic. God makes sure the planes would travel at the same speed regardless of direction.

Otherwise it would be impossible to play catch.

If they leave the atmosphere, then yes. But planes normally "hug" the
ground which is dragging the atmosphere along with it. If you encounter
a head or side wind, it will take longer. Just like the man below will
have a hard time reaching his destination if he tries flying there.

The experiment has already been done. It has nothing to do with atmosphere or winds.

"During October, 1971, four cesium atomic beam clocks were flown on regularly scheduled commercial jet flights around the world twice, once eastward and once westward, to test Einstein's theory of relativity with macroscopic clocks. From the actual flight paths of each trip, the theory predicted that the flying clocks, compared with reference clocks at the U.S. Naval Observatory, should have lost 40+/-23 nanoseconds during the eastward trip and should have gained 275+/-21 nanoseconds during the westward trip ... Relative to the atomic time scale of the U.S. Naval Observatory, the flying clocks lost 59+/-10 nanoseconds during the eastward trip and gained 273+/-7 nanosecond during the westward trip, where the errors are the corresponding standard deviations. These results provide an unambiguous empirical resolution of the famous clock "paradox" with macroscopic clocks."

thanks for your answer, but it does not really answer my question about the earth spinning affecting plane flying times

The results from the Hafele-Keating experiment demonstrate otherwise.

"During October, 1971, four cesium atomic beam clocks were flown on regularly scheduled commercial jet flights around the world twice, once eastward and once westward, to test Einstein's theory of relativity with macroscopic clocks. According to NASA, the earth curvature is 8 inches per 1 mile.

Where is the curvature here???
ChicagoMirage.jpg

It really puzzles me that how could any one in the OT time ever SAY that the earth is not flat?

Hey, other people who made smart comments here, please help me out. Your answer would be very appreciated.

Common sense is often misleading. Common sense says the world must be flat instead of spherical. For years people argued that everything would fall off the bottom of a spherical earth. Your knowledge of science and history are apparent from your statement that the concept of a spherical earth is only about 50 years old. The Greeks of 3000 years ago knew it was spherical, the Europeans of the 15th Century knew it. Almost all of mankind believes it is spherical.
I am not denigrating science, it does however have its limits and yes it is great that we can communicate through science in this way. However I must disagree with you that science changing is a strength. Science has been around thousands of years and has changed in that time.

It sure has. We didn't have cars or computers or xray machines or knowledge of what causes infections or vaccines thousands of years ago, now we do - because science advances. That is its strength.

To go back to a point about wider acceptance of a globe earth and the evidence. It is my understanding that in the early part of the century the globe earth was more openly questioned and those that questioned it were not subject to ridicule. See above, it's more like 3000 years.

You can measure the angle of the sun in deep wells at the Sun's zenith. That's how the Greeks did it.

280px-Eratosthenes%27_method_for_determining_the_size_of_the_Earth.svg.png
everybody during the time of the bible knew the earth was flat and under a firmament. Science has an agenda to undermine God and christianity. One of the ways it does this is by saying earth is a globe and moving. There is no biblical evidence of a globe that is spinning at 1000 mph and moving in orbit at many times this speed. People have been programmed (brainwashed) through the education system to believe a globe earth theory. They cannot think outside their western education and mindset, not just in this area but in other areas of their lives. This is why I am getting such an aggressive reaction towards perfectly legitimate questions about thestate of our earth. Goodness help me if I start discussing capitalism and democracy!!!

That isn't true. The Greeks knew it was round.

It isn't the fault of science that some Christians refuse to accept facts. That isn't an agenda. That is just people wanting to be sane and not having to deny reality.
