Do you realize by insisting on a day-age, you are just going along with millions of years people, who state that the millions of dead fossils (with diseases, carnivorous behavior) existed prior to man. They deny the worldwide flood, which makes better sense of the fossils anyway. So if you uphold millions of years of death before sin you have to contradict that sin affected everything in creation (Romans 8:20-22), even animal life. And if Jesus, in removing the curse, brings animals to a vegetarian diet again (and unafraid of man), doesn't it make sense that animal death did not precede man or sin? And that's the clear reading of Scripture. Animals and people are vegetarians. Adam and Eve sin, and God kills an animal (or animals). After the worldwide flood, God permits men to eat animals.
I seek to find the agreement of Scripture, Science and History. Genesis 1:2 shows that darkness/death was upon everything God created apart from Himself. That's because only God is "good" according to Jesus:
Luk 18:19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou Me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
*** Exodus 20:11 makes clear, in the past tense, that God made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, in six days, and on the seventh day He rested, combining Genesis 1:1 with the rest of Genesis 1 and through 2:3. But you say we are still in the sixth day, in which God saw that everything He had made was "very good". It is not very good today. Everyone is a sinner and wickedness is abounding more and more. There is suffering and sickness and death. All creation is groaning. God gave us our seven day week. Sabbath was made for man, as Jesus stated.
Here is the entire History of God's 6 Days of Creation. It is found in Genesis chapter One and it details the events of the first 6 Days/Ages of God's creation. We live today at Gen 1:27 since God is STILL "creating mankind in Christ". This work continues until the 3rd Heaven is filled with it's entire "host" of born again believers in Jesus Christ.
*** The clear biblical account does not suggest, imply, or allow for anything different than six ordinary days of creation. Man twists things in order to not disagree with the scientists who think they are smart and like to berate people who disagree with their "naturalistic" (no God) concept of beginnings. We need to believe God's Word and let the mockers mock.
Since the present 6th Day continues, the length in man's time, of God's Days, is some 4.5 Billion years per Day or periods of Labor. At the end of the present 6th Day, Jesus will return and change ALL living creatures into vegetarians as Gen 1:30 and Isaiah 11:7 states. Then, and only then God will proclaim that it is "very good" since His Creation of the perfect 3rd Heaven will be finished or brought to perfection in just 6 of God's Days. Genesis One is the entire History of God's Creation in just one chapter. Our God is an awesome God.
