I think the poor and the rich alike can take their eyes off God. It's evident the Lord wants us to prosper. I think the issue here is that one who is poor is not to be looked upon by himself or others as something low, for the Lord has elevated him. He is rich in Christ. On the other hand, the rich is not condemned for having money, but he must remember that all that passes away, and even he himself will pass away. This life is very short, but as a vapor, therefore the things we possess in this life will not last.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

This is one of the first verses I ever memorized. It gives me such motivation to make the right choice in resisting temptation. This is one to say over and over again, especially if you're in a battle resisting sin. Hmmm...aren't we all?

James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Living on the ocean and having seen the waves throughout my life I get a good picture of what he's talking about. The waves never really go anywhere. They build up as they swell and break, racing to the shore (sometimes with me on them!), only to draw right back into the sea again. Back and forth, back and forth. We are not to be like this in our faith. If I'm unsure, I go the Word to find out the will of the Lord. Once that's settled, that's it. If doubt enters my mind, I've learned to go right back to that Word so as not to be moved, or to be tossed about as a wave.

Good reminder of where to wait.. rest.. keep our mind fixed upon.. When we have asked the LORD for something that seems to take forever.. We must just stand and continue to rest on His Word.. Thank you Cindy..

There were words in this scripture that captured my attention so I did a little research on them. Let me give you the scripture in a few versions first, and then we'll take a look at the Greek words.

James 1:21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. NASB

21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. NKJV

21 Therefore, ridding yourselves of all moral filth and evil excess, humbly receive the implanted word, which is able to save you. HCS

Filthiness was the first word. What I found out is that filthiness was the best translation. Moving right along, the next one was "remains". The Greek words is defined as residue remaining.

Have you ever washed your dishes and found that there was still a film of grease left behind? Maybe before the days of "Dawn". What did you do? You had to take extra care to get it off. In the same way, it seems some "filth" wants to cling to us after we have come to the Lord, and we too need to return for another washing.

The Lord is serious about filth. We are to be holy, and without sin, without spot, without blemish. Eph. 5 He has called us out of darkness and told us not to touch the unclean thing. 2 Cor. 7.

Meekness was by far the most interesting word. I don't think we have an English word to adequately convey the meaning of the Greek one. My next post will be on meekness.

Meekness is defined as

mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit, meekness. It is an inwrought grace of the soul, not in a person's outward behavior only or in his relations with his fellow man, but first and chielfy toward God. It accepts His dealings as good and does not fight against Him.

It is not weakness, it is the fruit of power.

The Lord was not meek because He could not help Himself, but because He had the infinite resources of God at His command.

It is the opposite of self-assertiveness and self-interest. It is neither elated or cast down, because it is not occupied with self at all.

This is taken from Vines Expository of the New Testament. There's a lot more there, but this is what I have written into the margin of my Bible.

I see this exemplified in Jesus all the time. Remember when He said He could call a legion of angels to deliver Him? He had the authority, and He also had the power to control Himself, staying focused on the purpose He was sent for.

Not occupied with self. Isn't that a big one? Lord, help us all to get past ourselves.

With "meekness" we are to receive the Word of God.

God’s Word requires listeners to be doers.They had heard this doctrine; they had believed it; but they like us had to learn to put it to practical use.

Rom 2:13 (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified;

Yes. I had a dream last night that I didn't understand until I read this. I dreamed I was eating my dinner at a restaurant called, "Dinner in the Lake", but it wasn't a lake, it was really a rushing river. The water came up to our knees, and I marveled that we weren't swept away.

It's the Word that keeps us anchored. It's our faith that keeps us strong.

We were praying for healing for the husband of one member, and I heard the Holy Spirit tell me to place my hands on her head and ask her to stand in her husband's place. I didn't, because I was afraid I'd look silly and I wasn't even sure if it was scriptural. When I got home, the Holy Spirit reminded me of what He had said, and how I had refused to act upon what I heard. My fear kept me from being a doer.

Jesus said this.
Matthew 7:24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Luke recorded Jesus' words too.
Luke 6:46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.
49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

This little study helped me today as I was thinking about how certain family members don't seem to like us, they leave us out, they didn't even send a card for my daughter's birthday let alone money, and we always........blah, blah, blah. Quickly I nipped it in the bud. So what? A person not occupied with self isn't concerned about that. My concern is to love them, not try to determine if they love me.

In your case pc4, where there may be serious injury by a family member out of control is different. The Bible also say to go from the presence of an angry man. I am in prayer about your situation. May the Lord give you wisdom, strength, love, courage, and direct your steps always.

Amen. Do you know there is a scripture in Hebrews about the Word being an anchor to our soul? The end of chapter 6, I think. You probably already know. That's why you said it.

Dreams can be so interesting. And sometimes so weird.

I didn't, because I was afraid I'd look silly and I wasn't even sure if it was scriptural. When I got home, the Holy Spirit reminded me of what He had said, and how I had refused to act upon what I heard. My fear kept me from being a doer.

This is not uncommon at all. We lay hands on people standing in proxy for others quite often. But I know what you mean about stepping out and doing something you're not sure of. I've asked forgiveness of being slack in this kind of thing too. As soon as I realized my failure to act on His prompting I ask Him to forgive me and go do it if it's not too late.
