Favorite Southern Expression/Phrase

As in: "I dropped my fork, did you see where it went?" "It went up in under the table."

In my family we leave out the in and just say "up under" ("it went up under the table")


One my mom says all the time is "she could argue with a fence post"

Other things we say are

"fixin to"

"comere" (meaning come here)

"warsh" (that is wash with an r like "I'm going to warsh my car")

and of course the infamous y'all

My Grandmother had a menopausal friend who used to decide quite suddenly to "come out" of some of her clothes at rather odd moments and at those times as she was peeling of layers of clothing This Lady would say:

"IF you see something you ain't never seen before, just throw yer hat at it"

Tell me that does not cause you do crack a smile..

BTW, it's y'all not ya'll. Southern here, but I happen to be an anthropologist.

It's a contraction of "you" and "all." The apostrophe in contractions signifies the omission of letters from conjoined words. Ergo, "y'all."
