  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Kenneth Roberts, my favorites are Northwest Passage and Arundel.

Robert Louis Stevenson, my favorites are The Black Arrow, Kidnapped, and Treasure Island.

Joseph Conrad is excellent, Youth is short but very good, another good one is Victory.

Jack London is another favorite with The Sea Wolf.

And of course James Fenimore Cooper, The Last of the Mohicans and The Spy.

Yay for Haleyvictoria and the support for Douglas Adams. And others. Generally a fabulous list you have. And I agree with Loki that Rivers has excellent books. HiredGood, I agree, Stevenson is excellent. And I just finished Conrad's Heart of Darkness; what did you think of it?

My favorites would be Douglas Adams, Dorothy Dunnett, Alexandre Dumas, Ted Dekker, and Dr. Seuss.

"Heart of Darkness" was good, it was my first exsposure to Conrad. Like most people, I read it as required reading in high school english. Conrad was an amazing author, and the fact that English was his second language is even more amazing. It's too bad that most people only read "Heart of Darkness," as Conrad wrote so many great stories.

If I had to narrow my choice down to just one, I would have to say Roald Dahl. From Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to The BFG, the total depth of that man's imagination has never failed to astound me. In general, I have a preference for nonsensical fantasy like that of Dahl, Lewis Carroll, Theodor "Seuss" Geisel, and Brian Jacques, but I'm also a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's work. And although I don't care for his political views or his language, Michael Crichton's verisimilitude has always appealed to me (Eaters of the Dead is a real treat if you're a fan of Beowulf).

Chuck Palahniuk. His best book so far may be "Fight Club" and it is what he is most known for too. Although "Survivor" and "Choke" were simply brilliant works of his. "Diary" was an odd change and I'm working on reading his "Invisible Monsters" book soon.

All in all, he writes great nihilistic reflection on life itself. I love the books..

For Christian authors I like CS Lewis, Dave Hunt, and Matthew Henry. For general fiction it's Rumer Godden, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters; for sf, I like Joan D. Vinge and Connie Willis. I'd like to read more Mark Twain because I think he could quickly become a favorite too.
