  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Matthew 23:9

How do you guys justify your way around calling your priest, "father?"
Umm, the same you justify the way you call your father, father and the same way Paul justified calling himself father to Timothy and the same way Paul called Abraham father.

Obviously Jesus was not speaking literally call no man father.

:amen: Its exactly that.

I think what is meant in the 'call no one father' passage, if we look in the context, is that God alone can be our god. We can not create idols for ourselves. It matches well the first commandment "Thou shall not have other gods before me". To call a paternal figure 'father' is certainly not wrong, but to make ourselves a god in which we place our trust is a very grave sin.

Yep, it means no other person or thing can replace God in our lives. Don't call no man father as in don't make anything else or anyone else your God.

So I guess we answered how we justify our way around that verse. Interesting how Jesus said not to call anyone teacher- I think he was referring to no one else other than His Church has the authority to teach us.

Funny isn’t it? When were challenged about our "non-biblical" beliefs and the bible is used against us, it always turns out that the bible actually supports Catholicism and speaks directly to our beliefs, not against them.

You know after reading this verse in context verse 1- 15. Jesus is speaking about His coming visible Church on earth.

Those who sat in the seat of Moses were hypocrites and did not practice what they preach, but Christ's Church will be lead by Him and will be under His sovereign control. This is what “call no man father, call no man teacher and call no man master” means. Although men are given Christ's authority on earth to teach the faithful, they and us, the faithful and the bishops are to know they merely represent Christ on earth to us and that God is the one guiding and leading this Church that he is the one in control and it is He that teaches us through the visible institution we call "men." Christ also was pointing out the need for humility because the position is not one of power but one of service unlike the visible institution of the Jewish Pharisees party who was filled with pride. So really this verse was a parallel Jesus was making between the existing visible teaching authority and the one that is to come.

MIchelle- you didn't actually go and read the Bible did you? You know Catholics aren't supposed to do that!;)
Actully I did. Don't tell the secret service on me.

What was it that Scott Hahn said, “Being a bible believing Christan, I was required to become Catholic.”

Baby is doing well.

That is wonderful to hear! I meant to send y'all a little something and just procrastinated until it was no longer a "new baby" gift! I have offered many Masses for you and your little one, though! Okay- sorry to get off track there....

Oh, thank you. Offering Mass for us means more to me than a new baby gift. Thanks again.
