  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It can be. :)

Most of the kids we deal with just want to get their education and go off into life; but there's about 8 to 10% that give us all the trouble. So far this term the most serious thing we've dealt with has been a student who was threatened with a knife and a gun, then had his car stolen by the perp. The perp isn't a student, and we've been trying to find him; we can't do much until and unless he comes back on campus. We're working in concert with the local municipal PD.

But in the last two weeks, we've also dealt with an assault, two medical emergencies (student went into convulsions on one), a death threat, and numerous cases of students who were banned from residence halls trying to get back inside, to spend some time with boy- and/or girlfriend. We've also had a cocaine bust, a loon wandering around the campus with a pine tree and a screwdriver scaring students (he was on something), and confrontations with people who decided they wanted to throw their weight around.

We can either play it hard or soft, depending on what the individual wants to do; we usually let the student or the other person set the parameters for the rules of engagement. :) If they want to be nice and polite and cooperative, we'll be friendly and cut them some slack if we can. If they want to start getting ugly or profane or start the chest-butting routine, however, then it's okay, give me your ID and stand up against the wall, because you have one of two choices: you either cooperate with me, or you can go to jail. Simple as that.

Thankfully we don't run into too many of those. But I have been called every name in the book but some students, usually over parking tickets I've issued to them. :)

You learn to develop a thick hide.

HAHA.. The pine tree guy would have been fun I think. Now, most college police i've met arent allowed to carry weapons--is that false for you? I wanted to be a cop myself, joined the local auxiallry studied criminal justice, prepared myself for the Academy. Then our Good Lord decided to call me into ministry so I had to make many changes.

He was just tripping on something and sort of confused. Kept saying he had to get to a hospital which was "down the street", but the one he named is on the other side of town. We said, "We'll try to help you, sir, but tell you what, why don't you just put the screwdriver down on the ground, okay?" :) He eventually ran off campus and was nailed by local PD about three blocks away.

We wear lightweight body armor and carry 9-mm pistols, and we also have to be police certified. So technically, we really are cops, but we have a lesser exposure to the stuff street cops deal with. :) I'm not complaining.

That's just as important as any type of civil-service job. :)

Personally, I don't like the term "Bible believing Christian" because it implies that other Christians don't believe in the Bible. This, coupled with the implication of the OP that Catholics are justifying their way around the Bible seems a little judgemental.
I have a similar problem. There is a church just around the corner from where I live that has "Bible-based" permanent etched on their "marquee." Makes me mad every time I see it and I ask the same thing. "So the implacation is that there are christian churches that AREN'T bible-based" I need to write them a letter.
:sigh:

Saving Private Ryan, although the acronym predates the movie by decades. "Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition". (Similar to SNAFU, or "Situation Normal, All Fouled Up".)

Well, in MY world, we use a different word for "fouled," but then again, I DO come from a Navy background. :D ;)

Serves him right. :p

Same thing with the Auxillary. I'm Police Certified in the Sig .40, PR-24, OC, and wore the body armor - a generous better than nothing hand me down from the Dept. :p

Ha - perhaps. The Deputies treat you like garbage until you EARN thier respect. Only natrual I suppose, but you make 1 mad the entire dept. doesnt want to ride with you.
