Is writing fanfiction wrong? I won’t go into detail, but I enjoy writing fanfiction for Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit... amongst a few others.

I do not se any problem with writing fanfic.
I have written a few myself, in the Andromeda universe, and a few cross-overs with Battlestar Galactica and other stories.

Writing it? No, not really. Earning a profit from it? Yes.
Though the way companies use copyright is interesting. They often evaluate the action to take based on what the fanfic is accomplishing. If you're raking in a lot of dollars or defaming their product, they'll come after you. If you're essentially providing them free advertising, they'll let it ride.
