TULSA, Okla. -- Freezing rain fell in the nation's midsection Friday, and temperatures plunged from Minnesota to Las Vegas as a storm rolled in that could leave several states coated in ice.

At least two deaths have been blamed on the storm, some schools closed early Friday, and dozens of flights were delayed.

FRESNO, Calif. -- A cold snap predicted in several western states this weekend is expected to lower temperatures in California to the teens, worrying farmers with a citrus crop still hanging on trees.

Since people had a conniption fit over the cherry blossoms in D.C., I thought I would add a little balance to the world.

Summer = August -May/early june
Not summer = june+july

In the North I assume?

Here in NZ we're still waiting for summer to arrive.

We've had the coldest December since records began. And Summer still isn't here.

I want my sunburn!!

Lucky the climate change people won't be!

In all seriousness, it amazes me how people feel the need to simplify the issue - climate change won't just be a uniform warming all over the world. Some areas will become colder, such as Northern Europe as the Gulfstream slows down, others will get hotter, like Africa, which can hardly afford it based on the impact it will have on already draught-prone areas. Some areas will become more wet, others more dry. As our Australian friends will know, their continent is experiencing their longest draught ever.

It's very un-christian-like to say climate change will be good for the northern USA and me because of warmer winters when there will be millions of poor dying due to draught or coastal flooding. Not matter how much I try and avoid it, I can't help thinking climate change deniers are any better than germans who turned their backs on their jewish neighbours as they were led away by the nazis - denying climate change and not modifying your behaviour is leading to the eventual death of someone be it in Africa, Bangladesh, you name it.

Sorry for this long response, but I do find these flippant comments above in the utmost poor taste.

I, and many people like me, have indeed 'modified behavior' because of a genuine care for the planet God gave us. I'm obsessive about recycling. I purposely bought a more fuel efficient car. I support common sense legislation on environmental issues. But I guess I am still (in your words) a "climate change denier". I just don't agree with the global warming panic. If that alone puts me in your category with the germans you spoke of, well then that makes one of us a little judgmental.

I wish it wasn't, but most of the evidence supports it. Do yourself a favour and learn more about it. And then consider what is the worst that can happen if climate change is not an issue but we take steps to avoid it, versus what is the worst that can happen if it is a serious issue but we sit back and don't do anything.

And just where did anyone say that?

A solid summary of the science is the Stern Report (or Fox summary), put out by the ex-chief economist at the World Bank, and a highly respected economist. It lays out the evidence as well as the consequences, including the economic consequences.

Incidentally the report has been endorsed by several nobel-prize winning economists. And if you don't want to rely on "academics", Goldman Sachs also considers climate change a major issue. As finally does Exxon - after throwing a lot of money at pseudo scientists to cast enough doubt on the issue that people thought there was still a lot of contention among scientists... (c.f. the tobacco industry's efforts)

Nice comparson. Really.

Not it's not nice, but it's brutal, and it's also apt.

yes of course, but I'm not going to sit back on one of the most important issues facing us...
