  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Exercise - what do you do for exercise - is it regular?

Michelle, I know you've probably already tried this, but I went to Walmart and got some Dr. Scholl's shoe that have really squishy souls and then I put gel insoles in them. It has made a world of difference. I do merchandising and display, so I travel from store to store walking on their concrete floors and parking lots. I know it isn't probably as much walking as you do on the concrete, because I do get to sit while driving from store to store, but I wonder if there might be a combo of footware and insoles that could spare your feet and legs. I know the concrete can be a killer. Just a thought anyway.

Well the most comfortable shoes I have currently are a pair of crocs and 2 pair of sketchers that have the gel insole. Problem with using inserts with these shoes are the fact that all three shoes plus the ones I usually wear in winter (clogs) all have open backs so they wouldn't work for the shoes I wear. Also currently I can't invest in any more shoes. I did think about the inserts. They are kind of pricey too. I even thought about walkfit inserts that I saw on an infomercial but again, same problem. Thanks though!

I have some shoes by Nunn Bush that have a gel cushion - they are very comfortable. Much better than shoes without a gel cushion. I think a good shoe with a gel cushion is the way to go.

We'll, I hiked 11 miles today on hilly terrain. I'm a little sore but not too bad. A lot of runners and joggers passed me. Every runner I know either has had knee surgery or needs to have surgery. No thanks. I'll stay with gentler things like walking or cycling.

I hate exercise.

I realize that many people think they hate exercise, and I mean absolutely no disrespect of your opinion. But I believe that no one really hates exercise. God made our bodies to move. What we hate is certain activities because they are boring or tedious. I think it's really all in the way we think of it. A walk in nature is exercise. A kayak ride or miniature golf is exercise. The key is to make it enjoyable.

I agree, I have never been able to get behind running. Walking yes, and even fast walking but running, I just don't think we are made for that, and it's not just the knees, what about the pounding the feet take bracing all your weight coming down, pound, pound, pound.

I'm impressed with the folks who can run for miles - especially if they know how to pace themselves. It was a struggle for me to run even when I was a scrawny teenager. I hope to get to the point where I can hike 18 - 20 miles in one day - maybe next year I'll get to that point. I think that is about the limit for a non-athelete. At that point maybe I'll be able to go up the same steep hills on a bicycle.

How long would it take you to hike 18-20 miles?
My step son is into cycling and mountain climbing. I think he's gearing up for Mt. Rainier in WA where he lives. He posted a picture of a hike he did 7800' up and back down 14 miles total with a 30lb pack. But it was 4,000' vertical 3 miles up to Mailbox peak on one day, and then 3,800' vertical 4 miles up Granite mountain with an unexpected foot of snow at the top. I admire him alot. I would die trying to do anything close to that.

Its been a year since I've done any long hikes. In general I can walk 15 miles with limited vertical in a day without too much problem. Last year I hiked Mt. Washington. The trail I took was 3700 vertical and over 11 miles. I took most of the day as I like to talk with the other hikers.

Cool! Hiking up a mountain sounds like quite a challenge. The trail I use has a number of hills but nothing someone used to hiking mountains would notice. So I notice them when I'm walking up the hills. I guess if I get to the point where I can go 15 or so miles regularly and I get the odd day where I can approach 18 miles I should be happy. I don't have to carry much with me - plenty of water - it's not like it is in the middle of nowhere.

I liked to walk on the beach or nature parks, but crime has prevented one to do it any more. I do a lot of walking when I go shopping for the mall is long and there are two levels. I always climb the stairs and I do gardening. Our garden is sloped so it takes a lot of work going up and down with tools and bags. My gardening exercise I have not done in a while because we have had rain every day for the past four days and if it is not raining then the wind is blowing gales.

I like the idea of hike's Doc and dayhiker but will not do it by myself.

I have just recently joined a gym and started "working out" at least three times a week. I like to do the stairclimber machine and treadmill for cardio and do a 30 minute circuit training course in the gym for strength. Exercising, however, is not one of my strong suits so it takes everything in me to get my butt out of the house and down to the gym. I despise every minute of it but I know I have to do it after receiving a wake up call that I have really high blood pressure and cholesterol and I'm really, really out of shape. So now I eat better, too, and the two combined do make me feel a little more "healthy". I will never have a great body or even a decent one, but I know the inside of my body is thanking me for tuning it up a bit.

My son and I were talking about working out together since he works at a gym and I said I liked doing the elliptical or the zumba classes and he said to make sure you do your strength exercises first because otherwise you are burning muscle or something like that I can't remember only that you should do weight training first

Good for you bob ... I mostly walk for exercise. I have been eating better as well and am down 7 lbs. this year.

That's great! I've only lost 2 lbs this year but I suspect that it's just because my fat is turning into muscle. I should walk more, too.

Thanks for the info, Michelle. The problem I run into is that after doing my strength exercises my legs turn to jelly and I can't do my cardio. I will try it again though.

Turning fat into muscle is really good. I like that I've lost the 7 lbs as my clothes feel more comfortable.

One of the things I've done is my evening mean is half raw vegetables and fruits. I figure it takes longer to digest so I snack a little less later in the evening.

I walk downstairs to mess with laundry...since I am 2nd floor and the machines are in the basement that is significant hike...especially since I always forget something and have to repeat the trip multiple time. :)

It is at least a half mile from where we get to part at the hospital to our department...so that is a mile. And I don't want to guess how many miles we walk on the floor in 8 hours.

And school...again, the parking lot is at least a half mile from the lecture rooms and would involve at least one set of stairs (often two) except that my backpack usually weighs about 50 lbs so I use the elevator to save my knees.

I can't wait to finish and get a normal exercise routine going again. LOL

I take long walks on some trails here at least twice a week. Last Saturday I walked 10 miles, which is a bit more than average. It is up and down hills and nice scenery so there is variety. There are some parks near where I work downtown. Sometimes after work I will either walk around the parks or walk around the safer parts of downtown. I probably should go to the gym more but it is monotonous to be on a treadmill or something and stare at the wall or out the window at the same place.

I do strength training with free weights using a video. I also use a floor peddler. I try and do everything 3x a week but I don't always make it. The strength training takes me about 45 min. With the floor peddler I don't do less than 10 min although I have done more. I also have a personal goal to Hula Hoop and as God is my witness one day I will!

my son used to be an excellent hula hooper :D. By watching him I finally got it, it's not a circular motion that is needed to keep it going but more of a side to side rhythm. I'm still not a pro at it, but I get the concept more since I watched him so much.
