  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

but you said that: "Whatever life in the Bacteria domain may eventually evolve into, it will still be part of the Bacteria lineage"-

so bacteria will always be a bacteria no matter what it will evolve into?
Even if it evolves into a human-like creature.

Let me ask you a question: Suppose your grandfather was Russian. How many generations of your descendants will have to be born and pass away before your grandfather stops being Russian?

Many plants grow easily in water.

If you looked into the YECist Flood scenario proposed by groups like AiG, they use the flood as a massive geological event that would have completely wiped out the entirety of the Earth's geology. The consequence is a massive release of energy that would have boiled off not only the oceans but the atmosphere as well.

So how well do plants fair in super-heated steam I wonder?

Good point... I'll have to think about that some. Just fyi, I'm not a YEC, but I defend the ark because the Bible says it. I lean more toward Progressive Creationism, and as such don't think time frames are understood by us.

You may want to consider the sources you're citing then. Answers in Genesis is a strict YEC site; they argue pretty strongly against other forms of creationism (GAP, Progressive, etc). Anything you cite on their site will be couched in their particular framework of Young Earth creationism.

Thanks for the heads-up, but Progressive Creationism draws from different wells.

Bear with me just a minute during this lull... time to preach just a little. Shut out all the chatter from both sides and just use your common sense. Doesn’t your mind tell you that you’re not meant to understand the ways of God (how we got here, etc., other than what the Bible tells us)? And, doesn’t your heart tell you that faith is a gift, whether you have it or not? Man can struggle as long as he wants, but he will never understand God’s mysteries. Put your trust in Jesus Christ, and through Him, and by Him, you will see the truth as you are meant to see it, each one individually.

Thanks, back to the duel.

Yes. A theory is an explanation of a set of facts, observations, phenomena,... within a specific well defined scope.

I'll add that it's a testable explanation.

I'm fine with Dogma's addition...however, I think it's already built into the definition. Any test that is performed will necessarily become part of the data set of hypotheses and observations that the theory explains.

To me this is contradictory. If you're believe we're not meant to understand the ways of God, fine. But if you follow that with a "other than...", then you are suggesting there is a way you're meant to understand.

In other words, you seem to be claiming a lack of understanding is fine but only as long as it's within the framework of your chosen religious belief. But what if your own religious belief isn't the right one? What if Hinduism is really the true faith? What if it's Islam? Or Shinto or Neo-Paganism and so on?

This is why when I "shut out the chatter", I feel that if the universe and/or life on Earth really was the work of a supernatural deity then it's most likely no single religion on Earth has it figured out. If 99% of them can be wrong, 100% can just as easily be wrong.

This is also where I feel that honest scientific inquiry is the best way to understand the nature of the universe in which we live. Science is based on the objectivity of the universe, which transcends individual religious beliefs.

Probably nothing.

That said, whenever anyone tries to preach their own particular beliefs, I would simply ask: would you also be willing to give up your own beliefs?

Because if you won't give up your own, why would I give up mine.

That the creation of life is a mystery doesn't mean that the creation story invented by the Israelites, for public consumption, was written by God. That's the huge problem, the false doctrine of the inspiration of the scripture has seared the minds of Bible worshipers into a state of denial.
