  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is an outright lie. Look up Lamarkian evolution. The idea is that if, say, a mouse lost it's tail after it was bitten off by a cat, then any offspring that the kouse then produced would also lack a tail. However, this is demonstratably false. The change in the mouse (the loss of the tail by cat-attack) is NOT presented as evidence for evolution.

Changes caused by evolution are easily recognisable. They are changes in the frequency of alleles (variations of a gene) of many generations.

LOL I remember my science teacher telling us the story about the mice in like 7th grade!

She said that no matter how many tails were cut off, no mouse was ever born without a tail... this was clearly evidence against evolution!

oh boy! and I actually believed it until I learned a little about genetics.

That was one theory for a while. Obviously it was proven wrong. It was one of Lamarck's ideas that I believe Darwin thought to also be true, but don't quote me on that.

Well I'm not surprised since back then they didn't know what genetics were either... but for a 21st century high school teacher to still think it was true... that's just sad.

Every argument against evolution I've ever heard has been way out of date or out of context.

Nothing else is so strongly defended against all evidence more than stuff that contradicts people's religious beliefs. pretty sad imho.

Well, Darwin knew somewhat about genetics since he was a contemporary of Gregor Mendel. It's sort of strange to me that Mendel's work in genetics helped solidify Darwin's work in the early to mid 1900s. Mendel was a Franciscan priest. Just seems to me an example of how science and faith can coexist.

Is it now?

Please show me documentation otherwise.

Since you used the l-word, I'm sure you can.

And I'll be looking for the cat -- not the mouse (or kouse) -- in the documentation.

look, all the opening chapters of Genesis are not literal, scientific description of the world s creation. Chatolic tradition provides a different perspective. Following the insights of St. Augustine and others, it allows that Genesis employs figurative language, so it canot be cited as a scientific text. At the same time, however, the "proven facts of science" accapted by one generation may be rejected by later generations in their conclusions. Chatolik Church specifically rejects any scientific theories (such as that of Charls Darwin) which insist that evolution was the result of random forces rather then the intelligent design of a personal Creator. Such pretentious claims move beyond the limited of inquiry that is possible to science.

Given divine revelation as a whole, the Church teaches that a few fundamental thrusts about human origins canot be contradicted by scientific speculation:

- The entire universe, including the human race, is not the result of chance, but of God s puposeful, loving design

- Human beings are not simply more advanced animals; thes bear the image of God in a unique way

- Even if God may have created the bodies of the first humans through evolution, their souls, like all human souls, were immediately created by him at their conception

- All human beings share a single, historical ancesor, so they all have the same nature and origin, and belong to one human family

According to Wiki :"Evolution is any change".

Evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What part of the word "any" don't you understand?
.
"Evolution is any change across successive generations in the heritable characteristics of biological populations."

Nice quotemine, or do you have trouble reading?

Do you think underwear counts as a heritable characteristic?
Oh Jazer, did you really think you'd get away with that?

You want me to prove that Lamarkian evolution si false?

Bloody hell, do your own homework. it's easy enough to find.

ya it's pretty amazing that the system that christian creationist Carolus Linnaeus developed ended up matching perfectly with genetics years later even though he had no idea what evolution was.

LOL, John -- only you could get an atheist to say this!

let's see... I suck at math but... joined forums 6 years ago... over 2 million posts... that's like 1000 posts a day on average...

you'd think you'd be able to convince us after all that... if you were powered by the holy spirit, that is.

If you won't believe the Bible, what makes you think you're going to believe what we say?

Our words just get in the way.

You provide evidence for your position that can withstand testing, and I'll believe it, no matter how ludicrous it is.

Is that what I asked?

I said Lamarkian evolution was wrong, and you asked me to provide documentation otherwise. So what, you want me to provide proof that it's true? I can't, because it isn;t. Lamarkian evolution has been discounted as false for ages.
