I think the most commonly probed part is it's lyrics. For instance the whole sex, drugs, and rock and roll attitude often displayed in lyrics. However, I don't think many christians think a sound can actually sound evil, unless they're really really dumb.
You'd be surprised. I've seen arguments for it in parts of this message board. Syncopation, backmasking, demonic forces in the chords of the electric guitar...it really is ridiculous that those ideas still exist. I find it even more ironic that some Christians hold onto these superstitions despite the number of Scriptures that condemn superstitions. Of course, that didn't stop anyone from thinking organ music was of the devil, or that cats were of the devil, or that witches were afoot in Salem, and I guess that some people's bubbled-in lives would burst if they found out that those things weren't true. And to hide the fact they believe in a superstition they try to make it look 'scientific'.

And would you admit that songs with lyrics that promote such behaviour is offensive (actually, a song about microwaving a hamster seems like it would be quite funny, but that's just my sense of humour)? Granted, I know there usually requires some discernment between when someone is "supporting" those things and when they do it for shock value or just to get a point across in some fashion (i.e. metaphorical use). There are quite a few subjects that people, regardless of religion or creed, find offensive. How would a victim of rape respond to a song that 'promotes' it? I would imagine they would be very offended, and rightfully so.

IMO, overwhelmingly Christians that adhere to some form of 'rock is evil' argument (this could extend to 'secular music is evil' as well, since that's what the most common argument nowadays is, and still supported with similarly unfounded evidence) take the exaggerations too far and don't take the time to reasonably think. They just believe what their pastors tell them to and just follow blindly without any rock-hard evidence to support their claims. And when they get blown out of the water by simple logic (or psychology), they fire back with insults or claiming the other person isn't a Christian (or a true Christian) and therefore their advice isn't trust-worthy, or saying that the evil music has seduced the person and they're going to Hell.

However, you'll probably find that a vast majority of Christians don't call rock evil, or even call 'secular' music evil either. Unfortunately, the small groups that do believe those things are very vocal and are the ones that the news shows 99% of the time, which in turn just makes all Christians look ignorant.

I went to high school with someone who microwaved a hamster.

I consider Tituba to have been a witch based on the Salem accounts. I don't agree with the trials or anything, but the Puritans got a bad rap...they were awesome theologically for the most part.

More than happy to contribute nothing of substance. :)

I think the whole "rock music is from the devil/and or evil" isnt something you see AS much today as you would have back maybe in the 60's/70's. Now I am not saying that there arent people out there who still believe this, but for the most part it seems to be a very old fashioned way of thinking.

A very good point was made, what exactly IS evil? SOmeone mentioned that killing, rape and, yes even microwaving a hampster is indeed evil.
However, I am a christian and I too believe that such things are evil. If someone were to come to me and started going on about rock or secular music being evil, I would challenge them to determine what exactly the bible says about evil.
I think the most part alot of it is conviction. Some people simply arent convicted by things other people are, and alot of times Christians feel the need to push their own personal convictions (like what music is cosidered evil) into other christian and non believers faces.

Having secular lyrics makes you no more evil than standing in a garage makes you a car.
The excuse given for that particular argument has to do with a verse that states that anything that isn't for God is against Him (can't remember the exact verse, but it's not even referring to music...something that, IMO isn't so cut-and-dried). And since Christian music is obviously 'for', that means that anything that doesn't even mention God is 'against', regardless of how many songs don't talk about anything that contradicts Scripture (or for that matter, what exactly is the proper definition of 'Christian music'? No one I've posed this question to has given a definitive answer). I'm sure it's a logical fallacy of some sort, but I don't know which one it would be.
