  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Evidence for evolution?

Unfortunately, such observations as this are neither proof for or against either position. The argument of similarity will always remain a weapon and a shield for both positions.

Similar creatures? Similar evolutionary ancestry, says some.

Similar creatures? Similar designer, says some.

Fortunately, through all the shifts and turns that man-centered and man-made science (and the man-made scientific methods), there is always the Word of God. Now if only we could all agree on that...

But what kind of similarity? The similarity that evolution predicts is not just any kind of similarity. It doesn't predict, say, the kind of similarities you expect between a Toyota Camry, a Toyota Avanza and a Toyota Prius. And it doesn't predict the kind of similarities you expect between a pegasus, a centaur and a unicorn.

There is nothing in the nature or person of God that would forbid Him from creating such creatures - therefore, the fact of God's creating all life (and note well: that is not in dispute!) does not explain their non-existence, and by extension does not explain why we have what we have today and nothing else. On the other hand, evolution does forbid, or at least render extremely unlikely, the existence of such creatures, and by extension does explain why we have what we have today and nothing else.

If you have been reading this thread, you should know that the situation is not that simple. Those who use a common designer to explain similarities stop right there: a common designer could use similar designs, but we have no idea what will be similar and what won't, or where the similarities will appear. Someone using shared ancestry to explain similar features, on the other hand, can offer a wide range of specific predictions about what kinds of things should be shared and what patterns the similarities will fall into. It is, in short, a useful scientific hypothesis, in contrast to the common designer hypothesis. And since the predictions are consistently fulfilled by the data, it is the model that scientists will use until someone comes up with something that works better.
