If asked my opinion, I may have answered something like that. However, my basic rule is to let the hostess be the hostess, and I'll be the parent of my children. "Yes you may have some chips. We'll go together, and you may choose which type you want. You may not have seconds until after lunch (or after whatever time)." That's my job, not the hostess'.
