  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Emulation-A sin

Emulation, the act of a computer program acting as a native system to a piece of software, requires ROMS to play.

In other words, if i wanted to play XBOX on my laptop, I would need an emulator .exe file and a disc's .iso file.

The law says it is legal to back up one copy of the ROM. It also says it is illigal to download it off the internet.

I wanted to play the Super Mario Land on my Palm but since i cant buy the hardware to back up the cartridge because I dont want to buy the hardware from China and also i cant, I wanted to get them from a ROM website.

I own the cartridge, so im not stealing, but is it a sin if i downloaded them from the internet.

This is kind of like downloading a song from the internet that you have the CD for but dont want to rip it.

Any tips?

It seems to me that the right thing to do is run in emulation only things you legitimately own... Which is pretty hard to do, in some cases. The next step is to encourage vendors to produce emulation-friendly archive media, similar to the Intellivision cartridge CDs one can buy now.

Emulators should be legal to download, provided that you own the system (not sure on that though). Roms are legal to download if you own a copy of the game. If by some odd chance you get busted for downloading the Rom, you'd have to show evidence that you owned a legal copy of the game.
