Electric Kitty!

Now that the weather has gotten colder, and the air is dry, I find myself getting little shocks when I pet my cat. Sometimes he'll just come over to lick my hand and... zap! Or I'll be petting him, and happen to touch skin through the fur... only to get zapped again. Understandably, he doesn't like the static electricity. Strangely, it doesn't seem to matter if I'm wearing shoes or not. It's as though his paws are generating the charge by rubbing on the carpet. That said, I could be mistaken.

Do any of you have similar problems with your pets? And if so, do you have any suggestions for turning down the voltage?

Heh heh heh. Sounds like you need a humidifier, or just a Bounce sheet to run over his fur.

Oh he's an energetic kitty, with plenty of 'bounce' already.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's him... he just rolled over while being petted, and seems to have recharged.

Oh, it's him alright, and most other cats this time of year.

A humidifier really helps to reduce the dryness this season brings on. Or you could just stick a lightbulb in his mouth and be resourceful.

Really? A humidifier will solve the problem? I'll buy one tomorrow then. My poor beast gets this sad look on her face when I shock her (or vice versa), and I don't like seeing that look . . .

Of course, the dryer sheets would be cheaper.

from time to time my kitty also gets very staticy - static electricity really is an amazing thing......it affects some people (and some pets too) a lot more than others.

I find that red-heads are typically more prone to static electricity build up - though whenever I tell people that they dont' believe me!

i don't know that i've noticed build up of static electricity in my kitty in dry weather specifically, in fact i think he's more prone to it in winter - when the weather is obviously colder & wetter......interesting!

Actually, even though it may seem very wet, a cold atmosphere cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, so the winter season is often what's called the dry season. There's more humidity come warmer weather, negating the need for a humidifier beyond winter months.
