I've written a lot of socio/political poetry, so I wont overload the forum with all of it.. but here is one. (This is sort of a rough draft.. just haven't felt inspired lately to go back and dress it up)
We learned our ABCs and 123s, while we dreamed of sunlight and climbing trees. And thank God for our literacy, but please dont give me one more standardized test because Im not standard. Call me sub-standard, but Ive raised above your standard. Im not going to be your failure. If you give me any more red Xs Ill hand youre test to you with green circles. Stop trying to test my mental capacity because I dont have a photographical memory. Instead of teaching life your selling grades by retail to see who can remember the most insignificant details. Our culture is making headway like snails, while our kids are being expelled. Educate 20% of our young people, expect them to carry our burdens like anvils. And theyll drop it on our feet to answer their hand-helds.Our schooling constructs information like bats.Beating children over the head. If you bleed on the carpet your out but not really. Youll be back next year, to steer your peers to fear. Heres your citation for not coming next time youll think twice. Telling kids a degree is worth more than their lives and tell the teachers to use grades to discourage rather than encourage; shed darkness instead of light. A message to our future, the school system can be ruthless, but keep singing your song. Play like a king even when it treats you like pawns.
