O Lord Jesus Christ, through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, have mercy on us. They have started their meeting today.

The International Joint Commission for theological dialogue between the Catholic and the Orthodox Church as a whole will meet again in Cyprus from 16th to 23rd October. The topic chosen for the plenary session will be the continuation and an exploration of the one ended in Ravenna in 2007: “The role of the Bishop of Rome in the communion of the Church in the first millennium”.

Cyprus (Greek: Κύπρος, transliterated: Kýpros; Turkish: Kıbrıs), officially the Republic of Cyprus (Greek: Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, Kypriakī́ Dīmokratía; Turkish: Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti), is a Eurasian island country situated in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey and west of Syria and Lebanon.

Cyprus is the Mediterranean's third largest island, and one of its most popular tourist destinations. A former British colony, it became an independent republic in 1960 and a member of the Commonwealth in 1961. The Republic of Cyprus is one of the advanced economies in the Middle East, and has been a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004.

In 1974, following 11 years of intercommunal violence and an attempted coup d'état by Greek Cypriot nationalists, Turkey invaded and occupied the northern portion of the island. The Turkish invasion led to the displacement of thousands of Cypriots and the establishment of a separate Turkish Cypriot political entity in the north. This event and its resulting political situation are matters of ongoing dispute.

The Republic of Cyprus has de jure sovereignty over the entire island of Cyprus and its surrounding waters except small portions that are allocated by treaty to the United Kingdom as sovereign military bases. The Republic of Cyprus is de facto partitioned into two main parts, the area under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus, comprising about 59% of the island's area and the Turkish-occupied area in the north, calling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, covering about 37% of the island's area and recognised only by Turkey.

You think we ought not to be talking to one another? As the very bishops in charge of this process said, nothing concrete can happen here. It will take an ecumenical synod to officially heal the schism. At best (or worst, I suppose) all they could do is issue a joint statement.

I am asking for our Lady Theotokos' intercession.

We need her help.

Ah, of course. Your original wording led me to think that we needed her help to stop them from meeting. Forgive me if I misunderstood.
