Been playing since 1979, and am currently playing a Pirates of the Caribbean game using the D20 (D&D3rd) 'Seventh Sea' setting. Most oif my roleplaying these days is actually using Unknown Armies (Atlas Games), Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium) or ArsMagica (Atlas Games) though I am keen to play Heroquest (Issaries). D&D still comprises almost hald the market, but it is far from the only rpg system. :)

Used to be that I thought most Christians were on Jack Chick's side in terms of D&D, but I guess I'm wrong... o_O I play 3.5 'cause that's the rule set I actually have, and I'm currently working on a homebrew setting (monotheistic!) in the event that I decide to DM. My group just broke up on account of the current DM going into Basic Training, but stuff happens...

I have had a few people PM me with the dangers of my hobby. I thank them for their concern and try to show how the hobby can be used positively, but they never respond.

I too, am working on a monotheistic world for use in a church small group (if I get up the guts to bring it forward to my church). I have a lot of (imho) great ideas brewing.

I am working on a world design which is monotheistic "under the hood", but with a variety of miscellaneous minor deities for various purposes. The careful observer may actually be able to connect some of them to specific angels...

many moons ago (high school actually) there were five or so of us that played ad&d pretty regularly and when our pastor spoke on it in church i actually stood up and explained to the congregation how we didn't use the game's system of gods (cleric spells were basically from the book like mages). looking back on it now it would've been interesting to see how a monotheistic world would've run.

i know it's off topic, but i still love the shadowrun world  ;)

Oooooh yesss... I remember how I was once told I was playing a game dedicated to Satan and that I would be brainwashed by the game. However, I try to realize that they don't understand the game and only know what they're told about it. Actually, today's D&D is probably a lot more "family friendly." Compare the basic or AD&D books to today's versions and you notice quiet a difference.

I love the new rules, but I really miss the 'feel' of AD&D. Maybe that's cause I'm just getting old. :p I just hope when I'm old and wrinkled I can still find a group to play with in the retirement home. ;)

Version 3.5..it is so fun, our group tries to hold a session once a month and we have a blast every time we play..D&D promotes a good time a great friendships..I really don't know why some people insist that it is a "devil game"

I play 3.5 and Arcana Unearthed, seperatly. I couldn't tell you which is more of a blast.

Have you found that most player's are not Christian? Just about everyone around my gaming table plays for a different team. I really wish there were a way we could find Christian RP'rs in a given area, not that I mind hangin' with the Unconquered. I'm just tired of having everyone at my table lambast the idea of a Bible study/RPG.

One thing is for certian, nursing homes of the future will need to stock up on dice.

Hmm. My lawyer's Christian, although he's not very much like mainstream Christianity, and he's in my gaming group. I'd guess a bit over half of my regular gaming group is Christian. Dave's an atheist UU, and I think Jordan's just-plain-atheist. Milage varies. I tend to use some Christian themes in games, although they aren't always obvious.

There is a lot to be said for being able to continue living after discovering what it would be to believe that a moral stance is worth dying for.

Yep! I'll say!

Seriously, though... I don't understand why some Christians like to consign the D&D players among them to eternal hellfire... maybe there's the whole magic element they dislike (considering the Bible expressly forbids sorcery) but... what?

How would you address the arguments against D&D presented in those articles at Jack Chick's site? (I think it was... William Schnoebelen...) Aside from the folly of blaming D&D for kids committing suicide or killing people...

I mostly respond by observing that telling stories about things, and doing things, are very different. I don't have a problem with characters who cast spells; it's not related in any way to what the Bible appears to me to condemn.

Of course, the kicker is that you're not merely telling a story about a character doing stuff, but actually mentally pretending to be the character... and anyway, according to Schnoebelen at least, the same logic could be applied to a porn RPG... (as if D&D doesn't have that slight possibility itself-- *ahem* Valar Project!) Anyhoo... what does the Bible seem to condemn in terms of sorcery?

Maybe someone should start a thread for D&D Apologetics! :D I think we have an interesting dialogue going here!

We actually have a thread on that in this very forum.

Honestly, I don't know exactly what the Bible is condemning, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't come in "spell levels" and have painfully obvious visible effects.

It's still sorcery, though... it's all in the intent. Whether or not it comes in spell levels or happens to be pretend is moot. It's still sorcery.

Just as a side note, I DID play D&D but... well, it was NOT a Godly experience in the least. It probably didn't help matters having a non-Christian DM (okay, he claimed to be Christian but sure didn't have any fruit to show for it-- judge them by their fruits), but it goes to show that, given a flexible moral system, the natural tendency is NOT toward God's way of doing things.
