Dub or Sub?

I'm going to assume that everyone here is an English speaker and that none of y'all know any Japanese.

So when it comes to animes, do you prefer dubbed or subbed?

I love dubs so much better then subs but I'm not surprised the subs usually prove to be way more popular in message board polls. It's wierd though I've met plenty of other animes fans over the years in real life and none of them prefer subs over dubs.

Perhaps, but I think it has more to do with the "nerdiness" of the particular person and not even just general nerd but specifically anime nerd at that. Kind of like the more original the better kind of mentality.

I like the subs because at school we're supposed to be learning Japanese and this way I can hear Japanese gramma with English meaning. I watch anime and surprise my teacher, win win.
Also I think it has to do with how you are introduced to it.

That's a fantastic reason to watch anime! That's the reason I started watching as well, though now I watch it cause I like it...

Definitely Dubbed for me. While I can watch a subtitled anime, I always get the feeling I am missing out on some good animation because I am stuck reading.

True, but remember you proabably will be missing out on something good because the translation is not adequate enough!

I've had a chance to listen to dubbed while reading the direct translations at the same time. I gotta admit that the difference is astonishing at times... but very forgivable for me. Unless they are only using Google Translate and I hear "Monkey Strong bowels, donkey donkey" dubbed is definitely the way I enjoy anime the most.

Once in a while you'll get a joke you wouldn't otherwise but even then most the time it would require fansub otherwise it won't be probably explained. And I find I miss alot more with the subs. Also personaly I find the official subs to be too stiff and the fansubs tend annoy me to no end by doing things like leaving the honorifics in.

Personally, I find the insistence on omitting honorifics or adhering to Western name order to be irritating. This has nothing to do with the whole 'literal or liberal translation' crock; honorifics and name order has nothing to do with that at all (and there is no such thing as a literal translation anyway). It's a mental dissonance thing, or secondarily, trying to erase the fact that you're watching something that's Japanese and has different cultural nuances that can't be directly translated. Writing with invisible chalk just to avoid showing kanji/hiragana/katakana on screen is the hyper example here (and one of the myriad reasons people hated Nelvana probably as much as they hate(d) 4Kids).

This is among certain fansub groups, I mean (and precisely the reason why I avoid groups that do this, not to mention that most of them that are guilty of it have members that act/talk in a way that makes me lose all respect for them*, so I wouldn't want anything to do with them anyway); it's obvious why a domestic DVD/Blu-ray release would choose to omit or change them, even if I don't like the reason. Every so often there might be a domestic release that has two sets of subs to cater to those that don't like excessive localization, though.

*I'm putting that nicely; if I wanted to be accurate, I'd probably get an infraction from CF staff for language.

Maybe you shouldn't be quite so quick to judge people you don't know. I have several problems with my vision, dyslexia and Adult ADD so I have enough trouble with keeping up with the subs that additional untranslated words are a problem. I don't mind them either manga or LN where I can read at my own pace.

My criticism was leveled at the fansubbers doing the translating (and mostly at their arrogant attitudes at that), not the viewers. The viewers have a choice on whose stuff to watch.

Sub, because Japanese voice acting is always pretty solid. Except for the ocassional Engrish (like in Shana no Shakugan, Shana said something in English which I could only partly understand, but everyone in her class was impressed..). Also, I am used to reading subs, so I am comfortable with them and don't feel like I am missing out on action.

My first anime I watched was High school of the dead, which was sub. Sub sounds so much better sometimes (especially in vampire knight)

I usually prefer subs but sometimes dubs are better.
