  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Lot's of things aren't in the Bible. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them. Alter calls aren't in the Bible. Anything wrong with alter calls?
Nope.........

These errors and inventions are not Biblcal and are not part of historic Christianity.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altar_call

An altar call is a practice in some evangelical Christian churches in which those who wish to make a new spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ are invited to come forward publicly. It is so named because the supplicants gather at the altar located at the front of the church building. In the Old Testament, an altar was where sacrifices were made. So, the name "altar call" refers to a believer "offering" themselves on an altar to God, as in Romans 12:1:

Some churches object to the use of the altar call for a variety of reasons. They argue that the Bible does not refer to any similar practice.[6] Others believe it is intimidating and therefore creates an unnecessary and artificial barrier to those who would become Christians but are then unwilling to make an immediate public profession under the gaze of an assembly.[6]

Some Christians object to altar calls in that they may mislead people into confusing outward conduct with spiritual change. In doing so, they argue, altar calls may actually give people false assurance about their salvation.[7]

I would like you guys to give your opinion on this. Can this be the work of the holy spirit?

I don't think so. But neither is it demonic. It seems like a perfectly natural phenomenon.

The Sinner's Prayer is also a Protestant invention.

And why are those neurotransmitters released during these specific services with many, many people following suit in these instances? Not just a little happy, but uncontrollably so.

Drunk in the spirit is not a problem, if by the time you are considered having believed, you have at least one question - for which you still have wanted clarity.
What?

I do not understand at all what you are trying to say. Not at all.

I don't think anyone is trying to be deceptive. There is no lying going on. People are genuinely mistaken.
I disagree. Because there is a pattern. A pattern of music, and speech and atmosphere. That is created by men, those things.

Certainly not by conscious decision. It's basically a reflexive response. And why the whole group? Because emotional responses are catchy. Like yawning. Laughter in particular is notoriously catchy. this is all basic psychology.

That doesn't mean they aren't sincere. There is a difference between lying and mistaken.

When I was young, my church use to have these things called altar calls. The whole thing was highly staged and manipulative. The organist and piano would start playing softly, the pastor's voice would start pleading. People would say Amen and Halleluyah, and the emotions would start "catching." It would always snag someone who would get "saved." The church didn't look at this as being deliberately manipulative. They saw it at trying desperately to save people from hell. All their intentions were good.

I disagree. Why would we think that if we put someone in a situation where they feel different or in a mood, would that really be them wanting to be saved or would they have been 'highly encouraged' by the scenario.

I am just not one who believes that the end justifies the means. And I think that since God cares about our heart and motivations that God see's it that way too, IMHO.

I have been to similar sorts of churches. My experience is that this was quite manipulative: the diploma of ministries which the preacher completed included lessons on which cords were the best to insight emotion in the congregation and a collection was taken right after this.

I didn't say I believed in Altar calls. I simply said that the people who do them are not being deliberately manipulative. They are quite sincere.

I'm glad my own church doesn't do this. I'm simply saying that these churches are not being deliberately manipulative but are highly sincere.

It certainly can be! I've been overcome by the Holy Spirit.
Since they said, "these are not drunk as you suppose" then it's clear the disciples must've been acting like they were -- There were 120 of them in that upper room who all were filled and looked drunk! So anyone who might be tempted to say they were faking it or that it was the devil would have to accuse all of them.

God does what he wants. He isn't concerned about religious people who get offended at him or try to tell him he can't.
"Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him" (Ps 115:3)
