  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's not just my community, it's America nationwide. People need to know that sobriety and responsibility are just as cool if not cooler than drinking. And that doesn't mean missing out on crazy fun.

I would agree.

I used to drink like a fish on occasion but now it's casual/social on occasion.

I enjoy a glass of rose or a zinfandel on occasion or a cold beer...I think that there is no problem in that as long as you don't ruin your body physically by overdoing it.

Your body is a temple to God...

It seems that the general consensus is that drinking is okay, but using it in abusively, either through it becoming a habit, becoming drunk, or drinking when it is against the law is where people have trouble defining what is right and wrong.

It seems for everyone, there is a time and place for alcohol. It can be a glass of wine everyday for some people. For others it is only on special occasions. Some people might never want to drink, except maybe during communion/eucharist, and that's okay to.

My personal conviction is that alcohol is drunk for two purposes: taste or effect (or both). I think it's perfectly fine to drink for either reason. I just don't think it's okay to lose control of yourself i.e. drunkeness, but I think it's fine to drink for the sake of being gracefully inebriated, especially when you are celebrating with friends. It's funny, the other night I took two shots of vodka by myself for no other reason than tricking myself that it was warmer in my apartment so that I could go to sleep!

Alcohol is damaging when you are trying to get away from a problem, or when it becomes a habit. I truly respect people who don't want to drink, but as a counterpoint, I will say that you are missing out on an experience that isn't that harmful to you if you have self-control.

There is way to much of "you think, i think" in this thread. The Bible covers this topic fully. There really is no mystery about it. Practically apply what the Bible says.

True, and i'd like to put the emphasis on this, as i can see it's like that in many threads.

We're all happy to know what you think, but what really matters is what the Bible says. I what you think is what the Bible says, that's great! Tell us why you do so, or not, what experience you did. Everyone posting the same without taking care what the others say, doesn't help a bit.

I've post on alcohol in other threads, so i don't want to repeat myself. But i feel very free with alcohol, just as i feel free with everything, when i'm obeying the Bible. So i never get drunk, nor take the risk to get. And i'm very careful about who i am with when drinking, and the circumstances. My criteria would rather be - can it spoil my testimony? can it hurt my neighbour?

my dad was an alcoholic so i never had any alcohol in my house after he joined AA. I don't really drink often at all... maybe once a month. I just don't have a taste for most drinks like wine, beer, hard liquor... well, mixed drinks taste fine if they're heavily flavoured. But it's an expensive way to have a good time. I'd rather have a great time sober and save my money along with my self-control and dignity, thankyouverymuch ;) But a drink or two is no sin to me.

IMHO (but others do have different views), I have no problems with taking a few drinks, and being in the company of those who drink, but respect those who choose not to drink.

No I do not think personally it is a sin.

At the end of the day nobody can make the choice for you, it has to be your decision wheither or not you want to drink.

My parents are wine drinkers. Not often, certainly not daily, but they have a pretty nice collection of fine wines and it's included with nice meals. I've always been allowed to have some with them with a meal and I've come to love a lot of the white ones. Especially Pinot Grigio and the lighter, dryer ones. Chardonneys are nice. I'm less into the red ones.

Here at college, I've been introduced to beer. I never liked it when I was younger, but I've come to really like a cold Corona. And it just goes well with a lot of things.

The drinking age is 21 in my state, so we're talking in private settings here. As to clubs, well, it's okay, I'm totally not opposed to it, but much of the scene involves booze and since I get that HUGE things on me saying I can't order, well... And while the girls want to dance, I don't know if it's my resounding attractiveness or just the blood alcohol level working there... I like places where we can talk, so I'm more apt to want to go to a Starbucks or something than a club.

I drink... sometimes...

I don't have the urge to drink though, in fact I am perfectily fine, not drinking.

My mother is a Christain, she brought me up as a Christian. She is a very open person, so am I. Growing up, she had nearly no rules for me, as she said I was a good kid. Part of this was one day she said to me "I know your getting to the age where you'll want to go to house parties and keg parties (we lived in farm town :) ) but I don't want you to drink somewhere that you can get hurt, if you want to drink, drink at home. You know where the beer, whine and liqour is, and if you want anything in particular, let me know"

Really, thats how it was growing up.... I'd have a beer now and then... but I never was a heavy drinker. I now live on my own, in my own apartment (going to school) so while she was helping me set up, she made sure to stock my fridge up with beer, wine and smirenoff ice.... besides one night me and a friend drank a bit... it is still in the fridge untouched... that was over 3 months ago. I see it all the time, I just don't have the desire... I like it that way.

So yeah, I drink, I have no problem with it... but I just don't have a need to drink. I do believe alot of it was the way my mother brought me up and the relationship I had with her. I just hope one day I'll be able to be as good of a parent to my kid(s) as my mother was to me.

I don't find anything wrong with responsible drinking, but I personally try to avoid it for a few reasons:

I don't want to develop too much of a taste for the stuff.
I'm in college, where it's important to be a Christian example to others around me. Even if I could drink responsibly, others might not be able to.
I'm underage. ;)

[BIBLE]1 Corinthians 8:9-13[/BIBLE]

Okay the Bible tags don't seem to be working yet...
Here...

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol's temple, won't he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.

Having a drink or two is ok and I dont see it as a sin - Jesus turned water into wine! Would he have given people the wine if it was a sin for them to drink it?

However, if you are underage then that is illegal and therefore a sin. Even then, its the breaking the law part which is sinning. ( i think)

In Australia the legal age is 18... when I wasyounger i never drank at parties cause it was against the law for me to do so. But I wouldn't have an issue now.

I've never been drunk and never plan to get myself into that state though... The bible advises against drunkeness.

Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and just one single drink kills brain cells, so I do not drink. Never have, never will. But that is just me.

But you have to consider the theory of the herd. If you have a herd of Buffalo, the predators always go for the old, the sick, the weak. They're killed off, and by that process the overall strength of the herd improves (a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link).

So, when you drink, alcohol kills off the old and weak braincells first, leaving the stongest and the healthiest that were able to fend off the attack.

So by the theory of the herd, drinking actually makes you smarter.

how do yall feel about drinking alcohol with non believers??

i'll give yall 2 examples...

for yall who work..your office has a night out at the bar..all the drinks are on the tab of the company..you are over 21, you are the only Christian at your job... do you go? do you drink?

for yall who don't work...your non Christian friends are having a dinner party..there is alcohol present..do you go? do you drink?

holler back.
So we go drink... what about it?
Contrary to popular Christian belief, drinking is not a sin. There is not one spot in the bible that says that. Even Jesus drank and created more alcohol for others to drink. Now what is a sin is not being able to control yourself and getting drunk. There is a fine line between drinking and having some fun, and desecrating yourself and being a stumbling drunk.

Along with that alcohol is a very usefull product. One of the best things about it is its ability to create rich complex flavors that are unatainable any other way. Anyone who has had Creme de Menthe, a fruit vodka like Smirnoff Orange or Skyy Berry, Kahlua, any good mixed shot can attest to that. Cooking is an indispensible use for alcohol as well. I used to do steaks at a resturant done in Bacardi 151. The searing combined with the flavors produced an indescribably delicious steak. If you like chocolate you will be in heaven once you try mixing a good chocolate sauce with some kahlua and pour it over some vanilla bean icecream or some cake.

Drinking is one thing that I have thought a lot about. Growing up in a church that teaches total abstinence from alcohol, I originally had a completely legalistic view on this subject. I now have been able to think things through for myself.
Drinking as a sport is something that although is not listed as a sin in the Bible, it's something I steer clear of. I object to the idea (as others have said) of needing to drink to have fun.
I uphold the idea of not being a stumbling block - so if I am in the company of people who have had an alcohol problem, I am obviously not going to make life hard for them by drinking.
However, I also see that Jesus not only drank wine, but miraculously made wine (Wedding) so therefore, drinking in itself cannot be wrong.
I think the pastor that challanged JesusFreak to feel free to drink if they could make wine the way Jesus did, had a flawed piece of logic. That sounds like a guilt trip to me.
Ultimately, you need to weigh up the options.
Read God's word, pray, and trust that still, small voice.
Remember, if you are feeling that you shouldn't be doing something, then maybe God is poking your conscience....
