Yes, it's sad, but way back then, most radio staions would not play the orginals, and only because the groups were black--so when a song was great, it was often covered by an all white group, and THAT version was the one that got the airplay. In the case of this song, here is the version, by the Crew Cuts (yes--a clean cut, all white group) that got the airplay in most markets.

In my opinon, there is no comparision. The Chords version is by far so much better!

I have mentioned a couple of times in this thread as to how the big named record companies would "cover" the original version of a doowop song using what could only be described as a "clean cut white group," beause many radio stations refused to play the original version of the black singers. Here is a perfect example of this.

First, the "hit" version of "Little Darling," as covered by the Diamonds.

It is not all that bad, but it pales when compared to the original version as recorded by the Gladiloas! Note that this is not a youtube--but it IS the fantastic original!

There is no comparism--the original is far, far, better--now THIS is doowop!

I disagree completely.

The Gladiolas/Maurice Williams version is LAME compared to the Diamonds version.

The Diamonds version is both vocally and musically far more robust and exciting.

So we disagree. I still feel the original by the Gadiolas is by far the better version. And you feel the Diamonds version is better. The more important thing is that that both ARE doowop--one of the best genre of music ever!
