Iam just doing my GCSE's at the moment, and afterwards my parents say i can have a pet. We've had a rabbit, 3 guinea pigs and a hamster before, but sadly they all died....*Sniff*....i miss my bunny!

But we've never had a "big" animal before, and now iam trying to decide between a dog or a cat. I prefer dogs, but my friend has a couple of cats and i really love them too. So now i can't decide.

Which one should i get? ^_^

My vote is for a cat, especially at your age. Cats are much easier to deal with, they come pretty much housetrained, even if you get an 8 week old kitten. All you have to worry about with them is spaying/neutering and vaccinations (which are cheaper than getting a dog done), cleaning the litterbox and making sure they have food and water. Dogs, you have to do the vet thing, make sure they have food and water, housetrain them if you get a puppy, train them to not jump, bite, or do anything "bad" (nope sorry, they don't come pretrained) and you have to make sure that they get plenty of exercise. Lot's of work. Plus, when you go to college, it's much easier to keep a cat when you have a hectic schedule than it is a dog (plus it's easier to find a place that allows cats than it is dogs). And, If you plan on leaving your pet with your parents when you leave for college, then you shou;d probably let your parent pick out the pet that they want.

The only thing about choosing a cat is the higher chance of an allergy problem. If you have any allergies like me then you need to be around one (for a long period of time...several hrs at least) to see if you have any reactions. I'm allergic to only a few types of dogs like Schi-tzus and Lhasa Apsos...but I've been allergic to every cat I've come in contact with. Just something to consider.

Hey!
Well, I have 5 dogs, lol. So I'm going to say dog, I guess. There are some nifty things about dogs, that I think some people don't think about sometimes. Dogs are very protective, and they can guard the house, ya know? Keep you safe and stuff. But others are like lap dogs, such as mini poodles, or other small dogs. Dogs though, they can be a handful, I can admit that with knowledge, lol.
But cats too, are a great too, but I've never had one so I dunno if they're like a handful or not.
But yeah, I vote for dogs, cause they're real cool. :D

At your age, definitely a cat.

They can be just as affectionate as dogs, but for a lot less work and cheaper ( in both food and vet costs). Costs probably don't come into it now, but both animals can live for 15 years and it will more than likely be an issue at some point.

I'd suggest a cat. Much easier and less time-demanding.
If you get a dog, though, I would highly recommend that you research carefully and make sure you get it from a reputable source, such as a good breeder or rescue. (Not a pet store; pet store dogs are hard to housebreak and they are more likely to have health issues.)

It is a lot easier to take care of cats. And it's really neat when you actually train them to use the toilet.

One of my cats actually started doing that all on her own...I woke up one morning, heard a strange noise in my bathroom, went to go investigate, and found my cat using the toilet. The other one wants nothing to do with going in a toilet.

I would definately go with a cat. I think they are easier to take care of, and I've always liked cats better than dogs.

CAT! Although dogs rock, too. But cats are, as many people have said, easier to take care of but they still give you the love and affection. I've had my cat for 19 years and she's absolutely a part of the family. And oh the personalites they have! Just pay close attention to it's disposition when/if you choose one!
