Samsara
Drinks coffee past midnight
I was at the mall yesterday and the Salvation Army woman was bending over her knees and looked very tired. So I asked her to sit down, asked for the bell and I started ringing it and repeating what I'd heard her say to the passers by: "Merry Christmas!"
A group of High School aged kids were walking into the store after they heard "Merry Christmas!" and pronounced back at me: "Happy Hannukah!" I replied, "Same to you!" It didn't occur to me until later that that could have been intended as a "sarcastic response." Sera. Perhaps. Perhaps not. But the point being I started questioning myself on PC *holiday terms.*
All this aside but to stress a point of *offense* ... It's not my responsibility to insure people go unoffended. When a person *takes* offense, THEY are the ones taking it. I'm not offering it, necessarily, they're just taking it. If someone wants to be angry because I intend a warm sentiment, they can be angry. It's their anger and they can keep it.
Just like, what comes from my mouth never has anything to do with anyone other than me. NEVER. If I say "Merry Christmas" that obviously means: From where I sit. If someone says "Happy Hannukah" and I need to get uptight because I'm not Jewish well then, I am very sure I was already uptight.
It's about the spirit of intent. If I intend warm wishes and kindness it doesn't matter what falls from my mouth or your mouth to me. If I, however, am intending to *teach* you something or you, me, then the spirit isn't warm wishes but an agenda and I/they don't desire the warm wishes in the first place so they'd/I'd hopefully move on without taking it personally or as any reflection upon themselves/myself.
Merry Christmas,
Samsara
