  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Genesis 1:16 God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

They think the lesser light to rule the night refers to (paraphrasing him) a lesser light to rule the dawn.

The "lesser light" is the moon, Sam. It is seen only at "night", when it's dark. At "dawn" the moon is not seen, because the "day" light in "dawning", as the sun "rises" at "dawn".

The "greater light" is the sun, that shines during the "day" time.

As related a few times earlier by a few, yes -
as "dawn" or "dawning" can mean the "beginning" of something (even an idea, realization or beginning of understanding, like when something "dawns" upon someone)
so also in Scripture the "dawn" of a day , IN ENGLISH, is often seen and NOT realized to mean the beginning of a new day (at sunset). Likewise, I think, some translations might say IN ENGLISH "in the morning" when that is not at all what is meant originally in some contexts.
In other places IN ENGLISH, the dawn or "in the morning" is appropriate and is meaning the time of day as the sun rises in the east....
So , IN ENGLISH (and likewise western thought) , is sometimes confusing if not actually an error.

Yet there are those verses about the greater light and the lesser light.

Are you saying that there is NO night-time, aka, no "darkness", Jeff?

See post #38.

Your questions/ posts don't seem to have any bearing or meaning to mine.
When I posted this about long ago(months ago) posters, I was 'chastised' for calling into question their understanding of simple English, so I don't usually reply any more in such cases.
If there is something else to do instead of simply not replying,
well, I haven't found that yet.

I am sorry. Your post is confusing, as it does not relate to my post you quoted, nor the questions i asked, which relate to the question in the OP about "night", Jeff.

It looks like what "They think" might be right sometimes, and wrong other times.
Everything must be tested and proven true before believing it.

What part of what you heard them say seems important to you ?
I believe you are right here. Some things people believe is right by tradition, but later they discover that thing they have believed most of their lives turns out to be wrong. Then they have to change. It is hard sometimes to allow your mind to be renewed. And some people simply resist change.

Yet you have to be persuaded in your own mind what you will believe.
Romans14:5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

Yes, but what is really important to you ? (As in the goal, purpose, direction to go.)
As you see just in this thread, and in what someone said to you about 'dawn' or 'night' before you started the thread,
there are many conflicting answers, as frequently happens,
and in the world we all live in the purpose of most answers lead people deeper into darkness on purpose.
Thus , as written in God's Word, most people stay in and continue in darkness, and when Jesus came into the world as the LIGHT, they hated the LIGHT (they hate Jesus), and they likewise , as written, hate all of the followers of Jesus who are walking in the LIGHT (Jesus).
