• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I'm one of those *underweighted* peoples in the world and am looking to put some pounds on these scrawny bones.

So far my research has uncovered the most popular method to be that of .... eating. Eating LOTS and LOTS very OFTEN. I've been doing that for over a month now and have discovered that I gain if I keep up a very consciously rigorous routine of eating a LOT quite OFTEN but that I immediately lose if I let up even in the slightest amount.

Is there anyone else out there looking to gain and if so have you had these same difficulties? Also, if you use another method than just overeating, would you mind telling me about that method, too?

Thanks! Look fwd to hearing from anyone who is up to this mess.

It depends to a certain extent why you are underweight. If you just have a high metabolism, then eating lots will add temporary pounds, but a lot of that gain will be water and bulk. Stop the eating, and as you say, the weight will drop down again very rapidly.

Assuming you have no underlying medical condition, and you are reasonably healthy, a more effective way of gaining weight will be through an exercise programme, to build up muscle rather than fat, because that is much healthier to carry around. So I would look for good general exercise information, combined with a healthy eating plan, geared up to providing you with the calorific intake needed to sustain moderate muscle growth, and to maintain good health.

It is not really a good idea to fill up with junk. You are what you eat, so eat the best, eat healthy, and tone up everywhere to give not just weight but shape and definition. Good luck!

my prob is that i have a really high metabolism. i am in good physical shape and already quite muscular so am reluctant to take on an intense muscle-gaining agenda. so far the only thing that seems to put any pounds on me is *eee.aaa.ttt.iii.nnn.ggg.* a loooot (of healthy foods). it's kinda a hard balance to strike, though, because i definitely don't want the pounds gained to be fatty. soo ...

I, too, have a problem with my weight. Right now, I'm underweight, and it's not looking so good. A lot of people ask if I'm anorexic or something, but I'm not. :/ I'm constantly eating anything and everything in the house, but I don't gain any weight. In fact, I lose more and more each week. I dropped from a VERY healthy 140 lbs. down to 104 lbs. I actually feel gross-looking, to be honest. I already know I have a high motabolism, but that can't be all, can it? I've had my thyroid tested and nothing came up. I thought maybe it was stress, but stress never affected me this bad. I've been drinking this calorie-packed drink to help gain weight, but it's just not working. I'm really worried that it's going to end up making me very sick in the long run. :/ Doctors just say they can't find anything wrong... do you think I should try even MORE doctors for more opinions?

Can you see a nutritionist? They'd be able to help you make smart choices about what foods to eat to help you gain weight. They might also be able to help you decide what exercise can help you in that department.

I never thought about that. I'm sure there's some around here, so thanks, I think I'll do that!
