  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone else call it "petroleum?"

As a Canadian, I have a tendency to use British words instead of American ones. I spell the word "grey" instead of "gray", and use the word "stupid," as opposed to "dumb," which is American in origin.

I also refer to the fuel used to power an automobile as "petroleum," which is the British term, as opposed to "gasoline," which is used in the United States.

Does anyone else call it "petroleum," or is it just me?

As an American, to me, petroleum is the source of oil and gasoline. "Grey" is a color (the way I spell it) although I've seen "gray" used as well. I use both "stupid" and "dumb".

I only moved to Canada from the US a few years ago, but I'm already picking up some Canadianisms. Like:

*"taken to hospital" instead of "taken to THE hospital"
*"line up" instead of "a line"
*"till" instead of "cash register"

This may be a Prairies thing, but I CANNOT call "electricity" hydro. It's not the "hydro bill," it's the "electric bill." o_O

Err, and I call it "gas." So does my husband, who's 100% Canadian. :)
