I immediately think "no!"

When someone dies, people often say "Enjoy heaven, you deserve it," or "heaven gained another angel." etc

Neither is theologically sound

Thoughts?

Our Lady does.

otherwise; even she needed the Savior to 'pre-save' or rather pre-baptize her for His Sanctuary in the womb.

But she remained without sin. Unlike the first couple.
So, because of Jesus we may not 'deserve it' but He wants us to be there
He is Mercy and Justice.

Mercy is Who he is, Justice is what His Essence is about in accord to our acts.

More than a decade ago a very devout Catholic poster friend on a different forum used the term that someone upon their death "merited Heaven". I believe that he meant by the life that said person had lived, though he did not specify and I did not ask for clarification. I would add that the person who had died was a Christian.

God desires that all be saved.

In His mercy, He took on flesh in Jesus Christ, suffered as a human and died. He rose.
and defeated death, which is His desire for all of humanity.

God did not send Jesus to change His mind about men, but the change mans
mind about God.

People, tend to focus on people's unworthiness to gain Heaven, where God
loves us irrespective of our self-worth.

Nope, none except the Blessed Virgin. Lord knows I don't, and if Our Lord decides that I do when I die then it'll only be because of his death and resurrection and my cooperation with that gift that I would merit entrance into His Kingdom.

While our salvation is the result of Jesus and His works We can observe that a person has lived a life that witnesses the acceptance of Jesus as their savior.

Amen.

The weird thing is, the comment was made about a man who didn't even believe in God and hated Catholicism- when my mutual friend said he deserved heaven after he died- it made me very uneasy.

We cannot judge.
Even the Church is slow to confirm if someone is a Saint even if they lived exceptionally holy lives. For one thing we're not able to access this info so easily.
So the Church seeks miracles after death and even how many perhaps while alive?

Secondly; no man in Heaven can read the book of life. IE - no one knows those who won't make into the second life. No one can judge.

I'm not being judgmental- if anything I was "worried." At the time I was concerned- but nearly 9 years have passed. It's all in God's hands now.
