Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The scapular medal does need blessed, if I recall correctly; but once blessed, it can replace any and all scapulars in which the wearer is enrolled. The four way medal has a cross shape, and each branch of the cross has a different medal on it. It has the scapular medal, the miraculous medal, and I think the St. Joseph. I can't make out what the fourth is, and I don't remember. On the back, it says "I am a Catholic. Please call a priest."

Someone said something earlier about enrollment in the miraculous medal. I didn't know that had an enrollment. Can anyone tell me more about it, please? Thanks.

I think I said something about it. I was just invested in the medal at a mission--WAY back before Vatican II. Haven't heard ANYTHING about having to be before wearing the medal--in fact I don't think you do. Remember the miracle with that harden unbeliever who wore it as a dare (was his name Ratisbonne)? I'm in a group who make Rosaries for the missions and whenever we make a Rosary, we automatically put a miraculous medal on it.

I think I was given a brown scapular when I was confirmed (still in primary school at the time)...at least the string / ribbon was brown...and I was told I had to wear it at all times. There were two cloth pieces on opposite ends but the cloth was "protected" in plastic (like the plastic holy card protectors) and the plastic edges dug into my skin so...after a few months of discomfort...I quit wearing it.

Do you think this might be the same thing? When I did some recent reading on the subject I didn't find ones that were plastic coated. Was that just a 70's thing to do?

Peace

I answered that I wasn't, because I cannot remember, my grandmother says she is pretty sure I was right around my first Communion, but I have worn the brown scapular since about 93... even when I wasn't practicing the Faith for many years, I still alway wore it, I just couldn't bear to stop wearing it... Our Lady was tooo dear..

I have a four-way/Miraculous medal and a Carmelite Scapular medal. I wear both, though not together. And I have not been enrolled either...though I'm not sure what that entails...but both have been blessed by a priest. I've never had a cloth scapular, but I would definitely consider wearing one.

I bought one a few months ago, but I havent had my Priest bless and invest it yet.
I do wear a Sacred Heart Scapular, and I also have the Green Scapular as well. I have bought and given many of these away to people. Which reminds me, my husband just gave his away to a friend in need(he's picked up my habit) so I need to get get him a new one.
I honestly don't know what my Priest thinks of me. I'm always bringing new medals and scapulars for him to bless. Maybe I need to start buying in bulk and just bring a box to him. ^_^

I think they put plastic around the ones they gave kids thinking it would protect them. The plastic does not need to be on it, though, and can be safely removed. All that is necessary for a brown scapular to be a brown scapular is two pieces of brown fabric connected by string or ribbon, worn one piece on the chest and the other on the back. Any decorations are optional, and the string/ribbon can be various colors. Brown and white are the most common ribbon colors.

If you wanted to go back to wearing a scapular, you could easily enough get one (even for free, from a number of sites) that doesn't have the uncomfortable plastic on it, or you could make it yourself.

Are you enrolled in the Brown Scapular? It seems that about 20-30 yrs ago, when folks received their first Holy Communion, it was the practice to automatically enroll the child in the brown scapular, however it seems that this tradition is not practiced these days - at least not in my area.

Are you enrolled and do you wear a brown scapular today?
ukok just sent me the brown scapular as a gift, so I want to get enrolled and wear it but I have question about it.

Marcia, wearing a crucifix can be superstitious as well, if done for the wrong reasons. ;)

Surely. :)

If wearing a necklace or scapular enhances and reminds us of our faith, causes more prayer and reflection thru the day, then that is great and proper. If there is a fear of dying without it being physically on the body - as if that might change the chances of salvation to not be wearing it - then I think that is being superstitious rather than devout.

Geo, are you familiar with the Angus Dei sacramental?
I've heard it mentioned in passing on other sites, found a few sites on the net about it. It seems that this was such a wonderful sacramental to have.
Were any of you given one of these? Or had one passed down through the family?
Sorry, I know its not a scapular, but it brought it to mind.
Here are a few websites I found about it, but would like to learn more if anyone has info on it!

Marcia, fwiw, I don't think there is a person alive who thinks they will be saved by the scapular - but rather they believe Mary will lead them out of purgatory earlier for having worn it when they die. If you are in purgatory, you are saved.

I tend to side with Marcia on this a bit... I have a hard time swallowing that these articles of jewelry (or what not) will save us from some suffering in purgatory (indulgences). It's like... I read somewhere that you receive some kind of indulgence by praying with a blessed rosary as opposed to praying with a non-blessed rosary. Shouldn't the point be that we are praying and not the article that we are using?
