Do you want to live in a Christian Theocracy?

I believe living in an American Christian Theocracy would be

  • Great, bring it on.

  • Only if it was run by my denomination, or one like it.

  • Only if it was a very general consensus and constrained by courts

  • Awful - my beliefs are just that, my beliefs I don't want to impose them on others.

Despite my utter disdain for violence, I must always choose between the lesser evil, and between allowing innocent people to be punished, even killed for nothing, or to kill/incapacitate/imprison those who would do such things, I would always be obligated to protect the innocents.

So here's another.

I agree with you - humans can lie. One would have to test the motives of those who get into power. But since this would be difficult, the only theocracy (divinely guided as per my earlier post) I'd be happy with would only be during the 1000 yr reign of the Messiah.

Anything else I'd be extremely cautious due to past history :)
How would you know that it was really the Messiah?

(I'm really not being sarcastic, I'm curious.)

There has never been a theocracy that is preferable to a free nation. A free society and a theocracy are utterly at odds and cannot coexist, as every example in history has shown. Never has there been a theocracy where those of the minority religion weren't specifically oppressed.

So who ARE the 7 people that voted for one? Maybe it was a mistake.

Hi Jetgirl,

Jesus addressed this in Matthew 24:23-44 (I won't type all the verses out here as there's quite alot but on CF you can call them up). Basically he has outlined what we must look for prior to his return and to be cautious of those who may claim to be him (or wish to set up a society like the one he will govern).

Also elsewhere in the Old Testament you see some insight into how the world will be during this time period and I am kicking myself because I am rusty at my Bible Study to be able to offer you those verses. I believe they're in Isaiah and makes reference to the whole of creation living in peace ("lion lying down with the deer" I think).

Since the world currently isn't like that, any organistion or individual who would self appoint themselves into a 'theocracy' would be deemed as false and I would personally not want it.

Hope that helps but let me know if not (and in the mean time I need to swot up on my Bible :D )

Thanks Lotuspetal, is there a translation you prefer for this, I'll look it up this afternoon... it's way too early in the morning for me to be safely typing, much less reading religous text. ;)

Ok, so there is a kind of a "litmus test" (although that really isn't the right phrase) so that anyone who just claims to be the messiah would be objectively viewed.

I agree with you on that one! Hey, there's lots of verses to remember, you know generally what they are and pretty much where, that's impressive in my book.

Thanks for the info.

Ironic, huh? Especially since the UK still has Christianity as the official state religion.
They seem to be a little less militant about it however, even today. I'm still halfway considering it.

To not have to pretend to be Christian occasionally would be nice.

That's what I mean by it being ironic. In the UK Christianity is the official state religion, which is what many American Christians seem to want for the US, but you don't see nearly as many people wearing the faith on their sleeves or judging others for their faith or lack thereof over there. There also doesn't seem to be nearly as much gay-bashing or condmnation of premarital sex and cohabitation there.

Ah, I misunderstood. That's what happen when I post at 6 in the morning. :)

I would love to see that arise here as well, if we were to become a "Christian Nation" as some folks are calling for. Unfortunately I get the general feeling that most of the conservitive Christians here are much too rabid to let that happen.

One of the founding principles of America is religious freedom, and we Americans tend to whip those words around along with justice and equality and all those other words we think are so great. So you'd be hard pressed to find people who'd want to impose their religions on others here in the states.

Oh contrare. There are lots of ppl who would love to impose their religions on us, to a degree. True, most ppl wouldn't go all out and institute a complete theocracy. But there are many that would love to tear down the Wall between Church and State, and ban gay marriage, abortion, outlaw sodomy, and numerous other things based on their religious beliefs.

Considering that OT and NT sort of have different ideals, how would that work? Are we going to suffer people not to live? Stamp out those who oppose us? Or are we going to turn the other cheek? Will we have to where robes and Birkenstocks? That would be cool. Oh yea, and would that mean we would stop participating in science contradictory to the teaching of the Bible? Good bye, technology, Good by entrepeneurial endeavors, good bye intellect, good bye logic, rationale, understanding...

Sign me up! Sounds like a great plan!
