  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Yeah our TV was "huge" like that and yes we watched the test pattern in glorious black and white. I remember you only got programming for a very short portion of the day too. One thing I do remember is watching Stampede Wrestling in its early beginnings. Often reception was dependent on the weather and where you sat in relation to the TV screen. By the way I still own the old radio I listened to as a three year old with my brothers and sisters. It worked until a few months ago but needs new tubes. It even has a pull out turntable to play 78 rpm records like Frankie Laine and the Mills Brothers.

Well when I get squared away on this "house" thing in a few months just give me a list of tubes and I'll see if I have them. Can't promiss you anything untill they come out of storage.

Wow. That would be great if I can figure it out. It is a Viking which I think was a Canadian brand from Sears. (Simpsons/Sears) My dad who has since passed away gave it to me and it was all reconditoned back in the late 80's by a friend of his. I suppose if I look in the back it should say right?
Dad was always impressed at how well I picked up how to use it even as a tiny child.:D Wish my tech skills were that good now lol. gg:sigh:

Hey fella---I just noticed that was you. I was thinking it was the other "Jim". The other Jim is a great guy to. I was wondering why we had somewhat the same memories. Couldn't be that we're somewhat close in age? I know, I know, you're younger. Welcome to the GE forum :)

Thanks Rad. This is a great thread. I live in the past, so this is right up my alley. ;)

Hey it is good to remember. gg
Yes, it sure is. I especially enjoy remembering even more clearly the distant past like when I grew up. I hope the same for my own children when they get older...that they will spend more time cherishing their past as well as flourishing in their present and anticipating their future.

Blessings to all for the season.

well I love listening to the good old days they talked about . which most stories were repeated and repeated.
I loved the war stories my Dad told with uncles and friends. wish I had payed more attention to those stories, he told them right up to the day he died. ( the good old days)

Tatyanna have you ever been to PEI? I was there for a visit in 1974 and loved it. gg
Sadly, no I'm always going to but other things have gotten in the way.. However, my eldest son and his family spent a few weeks there 2 years ago.. My granddaughter was enthralled w/ Anne of Green Gables at the time so they had a ball visiting around all the sites.
They did a search at Town hall, the local Parish and cemetery and got me lots of good info.. I do plan to go w/ them upon their return...maybe next year.
I would also like to go to Nova Scotia as my mother was born there near Halifax..:)

My grandmother was born in Europe. She would tell stories about their Christmas time...that Saint Nicholas would bring children who behaved well during the previous year were given candies and goodies while children who behaved badly were supposed to get only sticks. This was motivational in making their behavior good over a year's time. I am not sure if there were ever children who actually got sticks though. Anyway, she spoke with an accent and loved to tell these tales.

Sounds delightful pilgrimgal.
Tatyanna we were also in Halifax on the same trip and I wanted to stay in Nova Scotia. I think we would have but couldn't think of what we would do there. The economy has been hard hit over the years. WE toured all around Halifax and Cape Breton Island but didn't make it to the Anapolis Valley due to lack of time. gg

In Italy there is the story of "La Bafana" and old woman who goes around on January 6th (Little Christmas)and puts goodies in the childrens shoes...the naughty ones get coal...
