Well, I got to put the UK on this map!
I remember the old, old black Ford cars with flat vertical windscreens and no clutch! They were always black BTW!
I remember when we got fire logs and coal delivered by horse and cart and one time the man let me hold the reins while the horse was walking! (was about six!)
I remember chalk and slates in school instead of books.
I remember we had a washing machine, a big old round green thing on legs with an electric mangle that my mother refused to use because she almost caught her fingers in the mangle the first time she used it! Was my dad mad!
I remember buying biscuits loose out of tins and cheese that was cut off a big block, fresh bacon and ham that was cut off the joint on the same slicer!
Then there's my nursing:-
I remember infusion sets for IVs that were made of red rubber tubing - boiled to sterilize - and a glass drip chamber
I remember glass syringes with metal ends
I remember red rubber mackintoshes that we put under the patient's sheets - horrid hard things, probably responsible for 60% of pressure sores!
I remember 'doing a back round' when we would visit every patient and wash their sit-upons then rub vigorously with a cocktail of spirit and olive oil, then powder liberally with talc. Their heels got similar treatment. I think it prevented a lot of pressure sores!
And finally, I remember the old uniforms with starched collars and cuffs, nice clean, white aprons and a starched, folded cap, plus the wool cape, navy or black with a red lining which we would reverse at Christmas to be cloaked in red whilst we went round the wards on Christmas eve singing carols with lanterns to light our song sheets.
Happy days!
