  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

On radio when I was a kid was
Young Doctor Malone
Guiding light----which I think is still on.

I never really listened to the radio much and only heard those programs because mom would have them on when I was watching her make supper or she was cutting my hair. The rest of the time I was out "playing".

I remember the first TV station in St.louis was channell 5 and would go off the air around 8PM, then later it would be 10:30PM after the news and then midnight a few months later Then they showed that weird looking "bullseye" looking thing with an Indian in it that was transmited when the station was off the air.

When they started up channel 4 we couldn't believe our good luck because we had 2 channels to chose from and double the amount of programing.

As my moniker sugests I collect old radios. I've sold most of them but still have around 30 radios. Mostly Zenith Transoceanic and a scatterring of radios from 1913 on up like Atwater Kent consoles, bread box radios to catherdral, tombstone, bakealite and older transitors.

Well, I'm new to the 50+ forum and just recently became old enough to be here.

I can't remember Howdy Doody, although I've heard of it. I do remember the old Captain Kangaroo from the early to mid 60's, and Sky King, and Fireball XL5. And there was Miss Barbara and her romper room. I think there was a version of her all over the county (USA).

I should like to say I remember the 60's better than I do the 30's.

I still hear that deep voice over the British radio: "This is the BBC, London,,,,and now the news........How ominous it was. I don't kow if it was by design or not, but radio and early telly came on the air in line with pub openings and closing.

One thing I do remember from the 50's is when the country singer, Hank Snow, introduced a new song whilst in Korea, I'm Movin' On. This became a code word when we were changing locations. We are going to pull a Hank Snow....

Cheers,

Jim

How funny... and very clever. I used to be so self satisfied when I stayed up long enough to hear the National Anthem when the TV station signed off for the night. MY MY how things have changed!!
