  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Good to see you back, McWilliams. The doctor came to our house to deliver me, but he had a nurse with him to help. Mother wrote in my baby book that when I was born the nurse said..is she Irish or German? Mom was German and Dad was Irish. I was born at home and that was the norm for most births those days. Not sure how it went with tonsils then cause still have mine.

Is it against the law to have our babies at home now...:o

That is interesting but makes sense. It seems that mid-wives often deliver now as they did once, but have better training I think and do this in a hospital or clinic. An acqauintence of mine from Arizona said she got to deliver her own grandbabies. She is a licensed mid-wife.

In 1937 when I was born hospital facilities and maternity care weren't as they have become now and many, but not all, babies were delivered at home. My husband, who was born in 1933, says he was delivered by a doctor in a hospital though. They lived in a rural area and it was something the doctors wanted probably as to not travel so far. But when I was born we lived in a city so the doctor came to our house. Maybe people chose. I am not sure and those present at my birth are long gone so can't ask them.

Bless everyone on Sunday.

When I was about 4 or 5 the doctor came to our house and removed the tonsils of me and my brother. He went first and I was terrified!! I do remember enjoying the smooth slippery jello and how good it felt but I still remember and dread the scent of ether that put us to sleep on the dining table! Sounds like something from a horror movie but it was common.
Even when grown and when my kids were small the doctor came to the house when I had a severe throat infection and treated me!
Hey, perhaps thats what attracted me to be a visiting nurse!! LOL

Mercy!! That must have been an ordeal!!

Oh yes! I love this thread and how reading the post dredges up long laid to rest memories! Like a trip though never-never land! LOL So many years of so many strange occurences, right? Fun!! Thanks Birdie for starting it!

McWilliams, thanks. I am just a sentimental girl, I guess. ;) Anyway, the reason it is fun is because of all the fun people who post here. (like some of ya putting on those clown costumes, but I see you all changed for church today! ) Cheers for all and the good memories. I have a feeling those clown suits will show up again sometime too! :D

Hugs all... --------------------

I was born in 1951 and my mother had to have a C-section. She was kept in the hospital for 2 weeks. She was not allowed up for a few days and then gradually she did things. This was standard procedure for C-sections. I had C-sections in 1977 and 1980. I was in the hospital 3 days for each. Both of my births were in the morning and by that evening, they had me up walking. I know that it is much better for you health-wise to get up faster, but I remember thinking I liked the way they did things in the 50's! But I honestly am glad they have made as much medical progress as they have. Oh yes, the whole point of my story was that my birth cost my parents $25.00 and my 1977 baby cost $2,500 and my 1980 baby was $5,000. My granddaughter, who was also born by C-section was almost $30,000. Wow! What a difference!

That is amazing. Isn't God good to allow us to see such delicate creatures?

I was pleased to see mother martin feeding babies in our yard today. What a wonderful gift it is to be able to enjoy the natural elements of our world.

Glory to God who made such beauty!!

The doctor charged me $50 to deliver my first baby as he so wanted me to return to nursing school and finish. However 11 months later I had twins and he charged $75 that time. Finally when they were 4 and 3 I did return and completed my needed time in 14 months, which seems like 20 years! At that time the doctors were so personable and supportive of student nurses and really tried to be of help! They were most appreciated!

From what you are saying it is clear that treatments have improved, but the prices have gone up even though they don't stay as long. $30,000!!! Hope they had good medical insurance coverage.

With an 11 month old and twin newborns you must have been hopping! $25. for the extra delivery!! Now the price of dinner out in a nice restaurant for two if you don't count the tip. :) or a shampoo and hair cut counting the tip!

So true, yet the hospital bill was about $300 and I was there for at least 4 full days or more, not sure! There were rooms in the hospital that ranged from around $6 daily up to 8 or more. Corner suites were $13.50.
Definitely causes one to realize that all has changed is such a few years!
Unfortunately I started smoking when in nurses training. I so regret ever doing such and often say that I quit when they got up to a quarter a pk! The truth is that I quit many years ago in ER, declaring not to ever touch another one if my Lord would keep me alive! I thank Him so much for that! Life has been so great and continues to be so!

There have been so many improvements in medicine. I remember when heart surgery was seldom done, was very dangerous, and you never heard of by-passes or heart valve replacements.

Yep, from Gall Bladders to Nerve Root Ganglia, you are in and out faster than Jack could jump over the candlestick but the bill seems to be inversely proportional to time spent in house.

It is also disproportionate to the size of the scar. A gall bladder used to require an 8" diagonal incision now it takes 3 or 4 nickle sized incisions.
