I keep all of my user files on thumb drives.
I asked, because if you think your HD may be going bad, that is a particularly good idea (keeping your backup files updated regularly, that is).

The aforementioned "clunking" sound has all but stopped since I started using the "sleep" mode, instead. Fingers crossed (though it is harder to type that way ;)).

My hard drive finally died last month.
My Win11 replacement has a solid-state drive.
They are saying that a full shutdown is better than sleep mode for SSDs.

I turn my computer off every day for several reasons. One is that if I put it to "sleep", a blue light blinks all night and I can see it from my bed in the next room. I could just put a piece of opaque tape over the light, but the main reasons I turn off my computer are to give Windows updates a chance to take effect and to avoid problems if the power should go down while the computer is on. I know Windows is supposed to tolerant of improper shut downs, but I don't want to test that theory too much.
