I think that mental health problems effect more young people than society would let on. I have suffered from depression since I was 13 but my doctor would not diagnose it untill I was 17 as before that I was told that it was "just part of growing up".

Has anyone here had problems with mental health, just wondering, stay anonymous if you want, I uderstand more than you might think the stigma attached to mentao health issues.

This topic really strikes a nerve with me. I, too was diagnosed with "depression" when I was 15. What I didn't realize at the time was I didn't need counseling or medication; I needed some good parental love, attention and discipline.

Too many teens are being diagnosed with depression and medicated, and doctors are overlooking the REAL problems--poor parenting, and lack of discipline in young people.

Don't get me wrong; I believe depression exists, 'cause I've been there. But I don't think that docs and psychs are focusing on the REAL problems causing the mental illness. They get a band-aid for problems rather than stitches...

I was diagnosed with depression about a month ago. But I'm not quite sure if my depression is triggered environmentally (I have been going through a difficult time, in the past 2 months) or if it's a physiological problem. It runs both on my mom's and dad's side, so I'm not sure what to think. I have been on medication, but it hasn't been helping. My doctor said it's probably not the medication for me. I feel lost. And hopeless. For now I have gone off the pills until I can try to heal myself without chemical stimuli.

I think medication is a hard one. I hate taking mine as it sedates me a lot and I stop feeling like Jay and start feeling tired and lethargic, however I know I am much worse without it. Anti-depressants take quite a while to work (anywhere between 2 and 8 weeks) and which one works best varies very much from person to person.

I have prayed for you and although I am sure you have done the same continue to do so as Jesus can obviously make a big difference to this situation, as He can to any situation.

I hope and pray that you will get better and not go as low as myself as I know how awfull that is.

I have depression, I have since I was 8 or 9. My doctor also thinks that I have anxiety problems, among other things. Up until recently I've tried to handle it on my own, but a few months ago I finally started to take medication which hasn't had any effect. There is some speculation that I might be Bi-Polar but I don't know yet. I assume this comes from my dad's side because his sister was diagnosed with schizophrenia when she was 13.

Very intersting thread!
My brother, as it is now becoming quite evident, has some minor learning and social difficulties, but we don't really know what they are... however they are not too serious, so i suppose thats a blessing!

However, it does strike me that no-one has pointed out the spiritual side to the story... Is depression soley something to do with a mental flaw, or could it be the devil trying to get at us in yet another way? It's obviously different in all cases, but i would not be suprised if some cases of depression, or other mental difficulties, were caused by the devil!
For instance:

Matthew 10:1
He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil[ 10:1 Greek unclean] spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

Here Jesus gives his disciples the authority to cast out evil spirits, and to heal disease and sickness... to me this emplies two are linked in some way!

then there was Mary, who had seven evil spirits in her, and acted like a mad/crazy woman.. but when the spirits were cast out, she was fine!

like i say, it's probably different in some cases, but you can't deny the possibility of it being caused by something supernatural!

I've had my fair share of depression, but I don't think we should be asking for handouts here. What the youth need is to discipline their minds. Do not let yourself be led by intimidation. Its voice can be quite loud in your mind telling you that there's something wrong with you or that you're not good enough. It is often the most prevalent voice in your thoughts. It's always challenging you. However, I think we need to guard our thoughts and personally command them according to God's will.
