I gotta keep a closer watch on myself, started having very cringey thoughts today about being trapped at home, cooking and trying to make the day special for my parents wedding anniversary-- and as a result-- not getting to see my crush on valentines.

Have to stop thinking about her-- especially like that. Need to distract myself and keep a better guard on my thoughts.

Ice cream girl came to work the other day smelling of cigarettes. She's otherwise a neat person. I like her, but maybe not in that way. Smoking is a deal breaker. How can somebody be so smart, even studying at Oxford for a spell, and yet make such bad decisions. Hopefully, for her sake, she was just hanging around somebody who smokes and it isn't her thing. I didn't ask as it would have been rude.

Also, she and another coworker were talking about how much they drank while in Germany. I've been to Germany myself, but I don't drink so I subtly steered the conversation in another direction. So much of social bonding occurs over alcohol. As a man who actively dislikes even moderate drinking, not in a judgmental way but simply not into it, this fact alone makes me a bit of an outsider.

Most people I know drink. Even at holiday meals with family, wine is usually served. With friends, I used to nurse the same bottle of beer throughout a party and not even finish. Seemed like the polite thing to do.

Declining wine at family gatherings is easy, as none of them are big drinkers themselves, but it was more difficult with friends. I don't want to come across as disapproving, but I also don't want the alcohol. For all they know, my asking for water instead might make them wonder if I'm a recovering alcoholic when the reason is that I simply don't care for it. So far, nobody has given me a hard time. Just the occasional incredulous "are you sure?" when I decline.

Work clients sometimes give me bottles of wine, which I graciously accept. They sit in a cupboard until I either give them away or throw them out. It's the thought that counts, but at the end of the day I'd prefer that they give me something else. Am I going to tell them that I don't like to drink? Maybe someday, but my reason is kind of boring and I don't want them to feel judged.

It does simplify the driving situation, but it can also mean that I'm the designated driver. lol
