Keeping the commandments and having the Spirit seems pretty close.
If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love; even as I have kept My Father's commandments, and abide in His love.

Notice the blue highlight. Jesus certianly kept the 10 Cs. I still ask what commandments did Jesus keep? I also ask what commandments did Jesus say to keep?

Verse 2. For the law. The word law here means that rule, command, or influence which "the Spirit of life" produces. That exerts a control which is here called a law, for a law often means anything by which we are ruled or governed. Cmt. on Ro 7:21, Cmt. on Ro 7:23.

Of the Spirit. I see no reason to doubt here that this refers to the Holy Spirit. Evidently, at the close of Ro 8:1, the word has this reference. The phrase "the Spirit of life" then means the Holy Spirit producing or giving life; i.e. giving peace, joy, activity, salvation; in opposition to the law, spoken of in chapter 7, that produced death and condemnation.

In Christ Jesus. Under the Christian religion: or sent by Christ to apply his work to men, Joh 16:7-14. The Spirit is sent by Christ; his influence is a part of the Christian scheme; and his power accomplishes that which the law could not do.

Hath made me free. That is, has delivered me from the predominating influence and control of sin. He cannot mean that he was perfect, for the whole tenor of his reasoning is opposed to that. But the design, the tendency, and the spirit of the gospel was to produce this freedom from what the law could not deliver; and he was now brought under the general power of this scheme. In the former state he was under a most bitter and galling bondage, Ro 7:7-11. Now he was brought under the influence of a scheme which contemplated freedom, and which produced it.

The law of sin and death. The controlling influence of sin, leading to death and condemnation, Ro 7:5-11.

Iniquity in this passage means: lawlessness.
No I don't think it means those not subscribing to the OC law known as the law. Iniquity is sin. The Christian is under the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus - Rom 8:2. This isn't the law as indicated in the covenant with the COI. Sorry

The law is about loving God and loving your neighbor. If you believe in God and his love is in you, you won't break his commands, even if you don't know the law because you have been born again of the Spirit.
If you love God, you won't have other gods - if you love your neighbor, you won't go after his wife, steal, murder or covet what he has. The commandments are about loving God and loving man. That's why if you are truely regenerated by the Spirit, you will establish the law because the love of God is living in you. You can't say that you love God if you covet, hate, lie to, murder, steal from your neighbor. It's not a combination of those things - all it takes is 1 and you have become quilty of sin.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. - James 2:10

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. - 1 John 3:4

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. - 1 John 3:9

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. - 1 John 4:7

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

You don't keep his commands to be saved. You love (do his commands) BECAUSE you are saved.

You clearly boast.


We are talking about the law of love and you act like we're not. Of course i would talk about fornication and adultery and covetousness in a thread talking about the law. And of course i would reiterate it many times when it gets denied many times. You only teach part of Pauls message you leave much of it out. Don't worry though, ill pick up the slack. :cool:

Where is this?

I showed you in many places. The apostles repeatedly command us and even begs us to to abstain from fornication, lying, stealing and so on. You act like they don't. They reiterate commandments from the 10 to demonstrate love and holiness according to the will of God.

And what about the new Christian, don't they need instruction?Why does Paul teach us over and over not to fornicate, commit adultery, steal, lie and covet? Paul sure seems to think its important to teach and learn these things. Paul says to preach the word because the day will come when men wont endure sound doctrine. He commands Timothy to preach all doctrine.



2Ti 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

If you are iterating obedience to the law of love, how is it different from what im doing? Will it void your faith? We're doing the same thing, only i include the whole teaching about Gods will, you leave things out.

Will obeying the law of love void our faith? No it wont and neither will obeying the law of abstaining from fornication. Its the will of God after all. Some say obeying the law of abstaining from fornication voids faith. Thats wrong and misleading. The anti law argument given here leave important things out that Paul does not. Why do i post about fornication? Because Paul teaches many times on it, its part of our law. And because its Gods will that we flee from it and it is connected to the law of adultery that comes from the 10cs. Some say the law of 10cs are obsolete OT law, but this is not true because some of them are taught throughout the NT. For example, abstaining from adultery is taught in the NT.

Paul is teaching the Law of Christ and the will of God. In the scripture from book of acts found below, is paul forgetting about Love? No hes teaching the law and love is not all He teaches unless abstaining from fornication is love for God. The body is the lords temple after all.


Ac 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
Ac 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well




1Co 5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
1Co 5:12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
1Co 5:13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
