The Catholic Church would be of no use for you if you are socially liberal (which I assume to mean you find no evil in abortion, contraception, euthanasia, homosexual acts, etc). While compassionate to sinners, the Church is vehemently opposed to these things. To join the Church but to dissent from her teachings puts one in grave sin.

just a quick note: our friend firedragon doesn't enquire Roman Catholicism, but old Catholicism.
that's one of the splinter groups of the rcc which came into being after Vatican I (1870).
Most of them are in union with the holy see of utrecht (Netherlands).
but some are independent like firedragon's church.
Most of them are liberal, similar to the Anglican churches.

We should take some care not to characterize all the world's Anglican churches by the reputation recently acquired by the Church of England, Episcopal Ch in the USA, and a few other Anglican provinces of the Anglican Communion (not to mention those that do not belong to the Communion).

The Roman Catholic Church in the USA and many other countries is, in fact, quite liberal. It opposes women's ordination, abortion, and (unofficially) gay priests and blessings, BUT on a host of other issues it is very politically active on the side of the Far Left.

The ways in which we should help the poor, for example, are not defined as doctrine that must be believed. The issues to which the social left are against are black and white issues wherein the left takes the opposite position of the Church. There is no room for debate on these issues. That is why the social left is incompatible with being a Catholic.

There's no question about the Catholic Church being Left-wing on social and economic matters, even though everyone focuses on the limited issues of gay unions, abortion, and women priests. But the point is not that the church is supported by the other Leftist organizations or political parties, etc. They're generally willing to take the assistance of the Catholic Church when the various legal changes are being debated (as Obama will do after meeting with the Pope), even though they won't go too far in voicing support for religion.

well it raises the question if "only" the parishioner are liberal or whole parishes (parish priests) or even dioceses.

Rome itself is not liberal at all. although it might become with pope Francis judging from the latest news in the press.
