  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Chris, there is no topic that you can not debate or discuss with people of other faiths. We have had countless threads in the GT section debating the validity of purgatory, how we should treat Mary and all other manner of doctrine that you likely find objectionable.

Guess what? You can tell people they are wrong, you can debate with them there, you can post scriptures and discuss matters. What you can't do is call them heretics and apostates, call names, sling mud and dispairage their intelligence. If you can't make a cogent argument without including ad hom attacks then you have a severe lack of maturity that needs to be addressed. Is it so hard to treat others with respect and do what the Bible calls us to do ... speak the truth in love.

Truth without love is useless and leads to totalitarianism and legalism. Just as love without truth is dangerous and promiscuous. We need both in equal measures, wrapping the truth we speak in the love of Christ.

I must say, I'm really disappointed in the current trend that is developing here in the Baptist room. There was a time, not long ago, when the General Theology was the hostile room, not any more. The hostile room is now the Baptist room! GT had a reputation as one of the worst rooms because of the differences between the Protestants and Catholics. Not any more. The Baptist room has surpassed it. Oh yes friends. The Baptist room is talked about. Gone are the days when Baptists could discuss things. Gone are the days of building up each other. Gone are the days of helping another who is weaker in the faith, or new to the faith. Those days are long gone.

Now it all about how each other is wrong. Now it all about how wrong you are if you don't use this Bible, or how wrong you are if you use this Bible. The doctrines of Grace which many a Baptist have preached, lived for, fought for, died for, been persecuted for, put in prison for, are no more. Gone are the days when God was sovereign and faith was a gift of God. Gone are the days when men and women were led by the Spirit "unto all righteousness." Gone are the days when one could say "Brother your wrong because this is what the Bible says." Gone are the days when one could say, well I may disagree with you, but I can at least pray for you.

Gone are the days where building up of the body meant more than tearing it down. Gone are the days where men such as Spurgeon, Gill, Edwards, Bunyun, Whitefield, and others were held as preaching the word of God, now these men are loathed. Gone are the days when time honored, tried and true Baptist doctrine from America's early beginnings were held in high esteem. Now are the days where we only tell others how wrong they are without pointing that righteous finger at ourselves first.

What was once a rather peaceful room, now has the distinction of being one of the worst. It has really gotten bad when I who has been labeled by another person of being "anti-catholic" am now being accused of trying to help make us (Baptists) Catholics. Gone are the days when all who confessed Christ are considered part of His body. Now your only part of the body if your Baptist. Gone are the days when one would extend a hand of fellowship to any and all. Now it is a club to beat others into submission. I was rised in a time where you were bound for hell if you didn't repent and accept Christ, it has been replaced with the theory of no hell, no punishment, no eternal lake of fire.

This room, over the last two months, has really become disappointing.

This used to hang in all Baptist churches in the south (at least all the ones where I attended):

The Baptist Covenant

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ.

We engage therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church, in knowledge, holiness, and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel through all nations.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to religiously educate our children; to seek to salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our department; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drink as a beverage, shun pornography, and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Saviour.

We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember each other in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rules of our Saviour, to secure it without delay.

We moreover engage that, when we remove from this place, we will as soon as possible unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's Word. And now unto Him, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, be Power and Glory forever. Amen.

This has become another relic of the past.

It is sad, and it is true, but I am very disappointed in what this room has turned into. This room was once my refuge on the forums, now....

Yes my friends, I'm personally, very disappointed in what is happening in here.

God Bless

DeaconDean

Till all are one.
As a Christian, this saddens me.

As a Southern Baptist, this worries me that the church I worship at could be falling apart.

I wanted to come in here and find good topics with encouragement sprinkled in. Perhaps I should not even bother if there is a problem as outlined in the OP.

There has never been one soul won by an argument. Arguing ( what many call debate) is nothing more than a prideful and pointless exercise in stroking your own ego. To conceal it in a counterfeit concern for the souls of those you argue with is dishonest at best. Most who argue never deal with what the other person is saying but are either waiting for them to shut up so they can tell them what they ought to believe or use their words as fodder for their cannons. There is a time to be blunt but it is not to be the norm and is only suitable when appropriate. Bombarding the walls of defense not only destroys the walls but those hiding behind them also. Much harm has been done by those whose zeal isn't tempered with humility and wisdom. We must be careful that we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Honest debate is a rare thing. It doesn't require that you accept the other's premises but only that you seek to understand them and deal with them honestly. Only those who fear they may be convinced to give up their stance attacks with broad assumptions and personal venom.

I wish that the mods would let me post ONE topic in this forum, where I was aloud to actually express my true feelings. I am handicaped, and can not explain to you why you are wrong, for fear of being banned.

To post ONE topic to edify or cause strife?

1 Corinthians 3:3
for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?

Philippians 1:15
Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife

1 Timothy 6:3-5
If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

2 Timothy 2:23
But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.

James 4:1
[ Pride Promotes Strife ] Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?

One post you all know WHY I am the way I am. I can't sucsessfully defend myself even against your own post. I wish I could tell you what I truley believe, and maybe one day, when I have had enough of this forum, I will do it anyway. I wish I could tell you what I think you have to believe to be a true Christian. I wish I could tell you what you can't believe and be a true Christian. But I can't, because it will offend someone. Look to the scriptures, and see that straight and narrow is the path, and that WIDE is the path of destruction. WIDE is the path that many take on this very forum. You want to unite us all as one body, even Dean says till all are one. He doesn't even know that all are already one. We are all one body of Christ, and the true body will not affliate themselves with apostacy, nor with heresy.

The bottom line is this: we should be trying to look at the Fruit of the Spirit rather than doctrines when we look at our brothers and sisters in Christ. Remember the story about the rich ruler? Jesus looked after the rich young ruler as he walked away, but Jesus did not follow him or attempt to coerce him. Jesus wants people make their own moral choices; and Christ knew this and permitted rich ruler to go his own chosen way. Jesus is saying that He cannot do our repenting for us. He died for our sins, now it is up to us to pick up the cross.

We are to edify one another (Romans 14:19) without causing strife.

Your doctrine is one of Universalism, and it is not wrong to call heresy, heresy.
What make you think I follow Universalism doctrines?

NOT EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM IS MY BROTHER OR SISTER. You miss the point. You accept everyone as a Christian, and don't do what Jesus said.
Are you judging them by what? How do I know you are a Christian (other than you claim to be a Christian)? In 1 Corinthians 13:5 says "Love does not act unbecomingly" which means a Christian should demonstrate godly love and have real credibility.

Anyone who claims that Christ is their savior is my brethren. Only God knows their hearts. I don't. The Lord said to Samuel, "Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord don't make decisions the way you do. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person's thoughts and intentions(heart)." 1 Samuel 16:7

You don't even follow Christ own words, and than try and reprove me with the Bible. That's called hypocracey.
Sound protestant and evangelical doctrine is useless if it is not accompanied by a holy life. It is worse than useless: it does positive harm. It is despised by keen sighted and shrewd men of the world, as an unreal and hollow thing, and brings religion into contempt. J.C. Ryle Judging based on appearance and doctrines are man-centered more than God-center. Appearance is one thing but fruit of the Spirit is the other. "You should not judge", is not the same as "fruit inspector", or "discerning true and false teachings". People who don't discern are those who are "ignorance". Its really interesting about people are mixing "judging" and "discerning". Do not have a tunnel vision" based on their teachings alone. You need to look at their whole being.

Infact, I think I am about to the point of not caring anymore. Should I stand for Christ, or should I stand for this forum? Funny that no one commented on the quote I posted, probably because you have nothing to say. That's fine, be blind to what I have said, and others who are strong in their faith, because a lot of people on judgement day are going to be screaming out Lord Lord, and they had better not look my way.
Let me ask you this. Are you seeing God demanding them to "obey or else" attitude? Every Christian must decide whether they will us their liberty to decide on their doctrinal beliefs. We are free, but our freedom does not mean we can know for SURE what is right and what is wrong. Spiritual liberty means the freedom to be all that we were designed to be, but this is not a freedom that is without restrictions or responsibilities. Grace is about loving other people that we have the freedom to do so but at the same time, respect how they practice their beliefs.

Not everyone can be John the Baptist, Not everyone can be Billy Graham. Everyone have their own spiritual gifts as God given them. When we look in the mirror, we are the part of the spiritual Church that we are in harmony with other believers in Christ. The idea of the spiritual gifts is simply that the Lord uses that gift in a unity, in a unifying way. God will use our spiritual gifts by His Spirit as He wills. That if we have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make our joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. (Philippians 2:1-2).

We all are different. People are different and people have different needs. There are many Christian cultures because there are Christians who will follow their conscience, feelings, beliefs and personal worship preferences. This is between God and each individual believer(s). It is important to remember that we ALL are different and in each of our Christian experience, there is no pattern or formula for identical Christian experiences. God has a plan for EACH of US when we are serving Him. We cannot and should not try to be exactly like each other in their Christian faith and life.

I will NOT divide my Brethren by what Bible Translations they read.

I will NOT divide my Brethren by what Church they go to.

Do you not understand that Jesus called people vipors, and snakes, and children of Satan?

By the way, can you list the verses and when you do, read the verses CAREFULLY and see who and/or what Jesus was REALLY referring to. ;)

I copied and pasted this into a word document.
I am going to read and study it.
I am going to print it out and tape it up in my house.
I am hopefully going to do what it says-

You are way to obessed with doctrine and your own little definition of what a Christian is BigChrisfilm. Just because someone is not a carboncopy of you are your every belief, that does not mean they are a heretic or not a Christian. Who are you to think you have every single doctrine right?

I'm not a Baptist, not even close. But I don't come in here and denounce you all as heretics. Though I don't believe in many of your doctrinal beliefs, I never question if you are a Christian. Such a judgement only belongs to God. I'm sorry you have such a minimalistic view of what a Christian is. Hopefully you can open your mind and accept those that are different than you.

I have to honestly disagree. It seems Baptist Churches, Southern Baptists especially, are becoming hate-filled. More concerned with condeming the RCC than they are following Christ. The church I used to be a member of actually hands out Jack Chick tracks about the RCC!

I doubt this place will ever become secular, I am afraid that it will become a den of hypocrisy. :(

I agree with this. Please stop judging everyone. If you cannot do it, then do it silently. I will continue to pray that Christ softens your heart, but please stop attacking all of the other faiths, especially the RCC.
