I'm sorry to create 2 consecutive threads but as a newbie I'm want to express myself! I personally havn't been told if our church ,SDA, has a solid belief regarding dinosaurs.

I personally think that until the flood they were about like any animals, but they were causing damage so the Lord didn't save them. Please post your opinions!

Welcome! It's fine to create more than one thread in a row if you have more than one topic that you want to discuss.

There is no official Adventist belief statement on dinosaurs, but you might find it helpful to go to the Adventist Geoscience Research Institute site. There is a FAQ section on dinosaurs there, and they also have many articles on dinosaurs from a creationist perspective.

You could also check out Walter Veith's site, Amazing Discoveries. Dr. Veith is an Adventist creationist and science professor at a secular university in South Africa. He used to be an evolutionist and atheist. He has an article on his site that discusses the extinction of dinosaurs (among other things), called "Catastrophism and the Fossil Record."

Finally, here is one more link, to the Answers in Genesis Q&A on dinosaurs. This is not an Adventist site, but they have some good answers.

One of my Adventist friends wrote this short article in response to BibleInfo.com, which she sent this to:

I believe the Bible when it says that God created all sea and flying animals on the fifth day and all land animals on the sixth day of creation week (Genesis 1:20-23, 24-25). I also believe the Bible when it says that the Lord created all things through Jesus (John 1:1-4). There is no confusion when one takes the Bible as the Holy Word of the Lord and believes what is written therein. Satan can deceive with wonders through deception (2 Thess. 2:9; Rev. 13:13), but the Bible is clear that the only One who has the power of creation is the Lord God Almighty, who "made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is". (Exodus 20:11; 2 Kings 19:15; Nehemiah 9:6; Acts 4:24; etc.)

How can you say that "There is little evidence that dinosaurs were taken into the ark." when even to this day, throughout the world, there is evidence that a few dinosaur-like creatures still roam? In Africa, in South America, in the Philippines, in Scotland, and even in the USA. One or two accounts may be proven as false, but we cannot ignore such a large amount of sightings as mere fantasies or wild imaginations. Even if you do not believe in such things, you have no authority to say that God did not take dinosaurs on the ark.

Everyone knows that dinosaurs are/were reptilian animals. It is also common knowledge that reptiles never stop growing until they die. Now we, as Christians, believe that the Bible is true when it says that Adam lived to be 930 years old (Gen. 5:5). The Bible does not say one way or another how long the lives of animals were before the Flood, but reptiles today are known to have extremely long lives compared to other animals. The giant tortoises can live over 100 years when people, in general, live less than 100 years. With that ratio, we could assume that reptiles had about an equal lifespan to humans since the beginning of creation. Now can you imagine what an iguana would look like if it was 930 years old and never stopped growing? It would resemble a triceratops.

So perhaps the true issue is not that "There is little evidence that dinosaurs were taken into the ark." but that the dinosaurs are simply long-lived reptiles (long-lived + never stop growing = gigantic reptiles), the ancestors to today's reptiles whose life-spans, just like humans and other animals, have been drastically decreased after the Flood and as a result of sin in our world.

So I hope we can agree to disagree on the topic of dinosaurs, which is not an issue pertaining to our salvation. All the faithful will learn eventually, after our dear Lord Jesus returns to reclaim His own, the truth of this matter.

But God told Noah to put every creature on the Ark. :)

Some scientists believe that even if dinosaurs were on the ark, they could have died sometime after the flood, as a result of changing climate conditions. In times of scarce resources, the larger animals would have been the least able to survive. Certainly, not every animal that was on the ark has survived until now. Many species have become extinct.

I personally think Noah would've done the smart thing and taken babies of every species. It just makes sense.

I suppose God could have sent Noah babies to take on the ark. I guess the only problem with that would have been that they wouldn't have had adult animals to learn from after the flood.

Here is an excerpt from the article that I linked to earlier:

Creationist Reasons for the Extinction

If one were to seek a reason as to why so many of the great creatures that once roamed the earth are now extinct, then one might conjecture that the post-catastrophic world is not conducive to their survival. Firstly, there is evidence for a massive increase in the salinity of the oceans. As a comparative physiologist, I have always been fascinated by the fact that marine fishes (both the cartilaginous fishes as well as the bony fishes) are anatomically and physiologically adapted to a fresh water environment. Their internal salt concentration is approximately one third of that of seawater and their kidneys are adapted for the elimination of water although this function is not required in seawater. In fact, their low salt concentration causes them to lose water by osmosis so that they cannot afford to lose water via the kidneys. The cartilaginous fishes (sharks and rays) solve this problem by retaining urea (a toxin) to raise their osmolarity to a level higher than seawater so that they can gain water by osmosis, whereas bony fishes desalinate the seawater with salt pump in their gills. Obviously these organisms were adapted to much lower salinities in the past and only survive because of their ability to osmoregulate under these circumstances. The retention of toxin by a cartilaginous fish is an indication of an emergency solution to which they eventually adjusted. Only organisms that could either conform to the new conditions or regulate their salt content could survive. The more sensitive are now extinct.

Regarding the land organisms, it is enlightening that there are only two categories of organisms in terms of their ability to cope with the thermal environment in existence today. Terrestrial animals are either endothermic or ectothermic. Endothermic animals (largely mammals and birds) control their body temperatures by increasing their metabolic rates where environmental temperatures drop whereas ectothermic animals control their body temperatures by selectively utilizing external sources such as solar radiation. In the absence of solar radiation, the body temperatures of these animals is the same as that of their environment. We also speak of these categories as warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals.

In a world with climatic extremes one would have to belong to either one of these two categories to survive. There is evidence that the great reptiles of the past were probably neither endotherms nor ectotherms, but somewhere in between. The same probably holds true for many of the now extinct giant amphibians and mammal-like reptiles. Studies of bone to marrow ratios show that the dinosaurs and other creatures were thus in this intermediary condition and would thus require stable environmental conditions. The plant life of the lower stratigraphic record shows that the earth probably had a relatively warm climate prior to the catastrophe and the post-catastrophic climate was not suitable for the survival of the palaeoforms. Moreover, the large scale reduction in vegetation associated with the destruction means that many food sources were no longer available and precludes survival of these animals.

I think that dinosaurs are really just the reptiles of today. Like that article I posted said, reptiles never stop growing, and if humans lived for hundreds and hundreds of years, who is to say that the animals didn't, too?

The dinosaur fossils that have been found, though, are different from the reptiles of today. They are not just larger versions of the same creatures.
