  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I figured that I could just start a random scientific chat about random things that we learn that we never knew before. Today I learned that sand dollars were animals and actually (sometimes) alive. (I can't believe that I didn't know that before lol)

Did you know that ketchup is berry sauce?

"Although in culinary terms, tomato is regarded as a vegetable, its fruit is classified botanically as a berry.[12] As a true fruit, it develops from the ovary of the plant after fertilization, its flesh comprising the pericarp walls. The fruit contains hollow spaces full of seeds and moisture, called locular cavities."
Tomato - Wikipedia

At least, that's what I like to call it.

As a kid, I used to swim out to a sandbar at Clearwater beach, in Florida, and dig with my feet to find these under the surface of the sand. It was a lot of fun, except when you stepped on a starfish.

It's tough to describe. I'd get some kind of a jolt from my foot to my head. It didn't feel like an electric shock exactly, just a very uncomfortable jolt. I didn't like it at all. No starfish were hurt. I'd tread very lightly because I didn't want to damage the sand dollars.

Did you know that elephants and mice [and other animals] have about the same number of heartbeats in their lives? About one and one-half billion. [In and around that number, not exact]

The mouse has a very short life-span - about a year and a half on the long end. The elephant [the African] - about 70 years on the long end.

Mice die relatively quickly because their hearts beat so rapidly and they use up their allotted number very fast - to keep warm, to digest food, and more.

The elephant with the same number of heartbeats lives much longer as its heart beats MUCH more slowly.

ABOUT 1.5 billion beats......and then it's over. Humans, it's estimated, about 2.25 billion beats.

Did you know that, in a vacuum, if you fire a .44 Magnum and drop a penny from your hand at the same time (and height), both the bullet and the penny will hit the ground at the same time?
