Genesis was written in the 10th century BCE, before mankind discovered the size of the oceans or the continents and yet the accuracy of this timeline is amazing.

Do you think the writers of Genesis had outside help formulating its content-?

Scholars in the first half of the 20th century came to the conclusion that the Yahwist was produced in the monarchic period, specifically at the court of Solomon, 10th century BCE, and the Priestly work in the middle of the 5th century BCE (the author was even identified as Ezra), but more recent thinking is that the ...

Genesis 1-2New International Version (NIV)

The Beginning

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the water
s to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
9 And God said, “Let the
water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.
10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered
waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.
12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,
15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.
17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth,
18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
20 And God said, “Let the
water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.”
21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water
teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water
in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”
23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.
25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[
a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.
30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Hi CK,

Yes, Moses had God's help in writing out the account of Genesis. He may also have used some Jewish scribes to actually write the Hebrew letters on parchment or whatever material they used for their scrolls.

God bless you,
In Christ, ted

The KJV is accurate. The NIV got it wrong, things that are different are NOT THE SAME.
Compare the two...

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

*Any portion of Genesis that was written by Moses was redacted and edited by later writers. After the loss of the first Temple and their nationalist ego identity, the OT as we know it was revised in Babylon for the purpose of keeping the faith of the scattered diaspora alive.

* There is no surviving source material that predates Moses IF in fact there was written scriptural accounts that he relied on. Consider this, Abrahams original religion was that of his Father
Joshua 24:2 All of the stories about Adam, the garden, Cain, Enoch, Babel etc. came from religious sources in Mesopotamia. People tend to think that the information in Genesis started with Moses up on the mountain (a story which also has 2 different versions within Genesis). Then what was their religion in Egypt for 400 years???? What exactly was Abrahams religion apart from the covenant agreement involving Melchizedek???? Between Abraham---> ________and Moses, what was their theology, their customs, their commandments?????

* Its not that Genesis had outside help, it's human, its a consolidated work that draws on previous work as sifted through the racial, cultural and religious bias of those priestly editors, redactors and authors who created it in Babylon. It was written by Hebrews and FOR an Israelite audience.

I have been wrong on a number of biblical events. Some of these errors I only discovered today while reviewing the Bible.

I stated that Israel was a person, not a place and I further said the land of Israel never existed until 1947AD. I was wright in stating that Israel was a person but wrong in stating a land called Israel never existed. I admit there was a "United Kingdom of Israel" in the 10th century bc.

Having said that, my true concern is the "covenant" between the Lord and the Israelite people. This is the heart of why I am here. Moses wrote the Ten Commandments from the Covenant and it is the covenant that the Israeli's must follow to get His grace.

And in closing the Israeli's have repeatedly broken this covenant & for this they will suffer the wraith of the Lord within my lifetime.

HI CK,

You wrote:

Yes, you are correct that Israel, as a people and a nation, have oft broken covenant with God. I'm not so sure that you are correct that Israel will suffer God's punishment in your lifetime. That's going to depend on how old you are and how long you'll live. It's also going to depend on whether God feels that their punishment is sufficient. He is on record as claiming that His anger would not burn against them forever.

Israel has already suffered God's punishments several times for their disobedience. The first really great one was when Nebudchudnezzer was called by God to overrun His people and they lived in captivity for 70 years. The next really big one was the diaspora and destruction of the temple in the first century shortly after they rejected God's Messiah. The third, as I see it, but I readily agree that many think it is a rather ludicrous idea, was the suffering and death of millions of Jews in the death camps of Germany and, quite frankly at that time, all around Europe.

So, whether God will bring any new great punishments upon His people is yet to be seen. However, they suffer in many smaller ways for their disobedience also. In the book of the law we read all the blessings of obedience and punishments of disobedience. While many of them are likely what we consider 'great' punishments, others could be much smaller. For example, just the fact that the Jews don't enjoy much peace of mind in Israel was one of God's stated consequences of disobedience. He actually told them that they would be frightened even when no one was pursuing them.

You also wrote:

Yes, the name Israel, in the Scriptures, is used as the name of a man. He was one of the sons of Isaac. Jacob was called Israel by God because he was to represent Israel through his own 12 sons. His 12 sons were actually the foundation of the 12 tribes of Israel.

There has always been a physical place upon the earth known as Israel since the days of Joshua leading the people of God across the Jordan to take the land that God had promised to Abraham. That land was always Israel, even into Jesus' day.

When Rome overthrew Jerusalem and laid siege against it, then Israel, the land, began to fade from the maps of the earth. However, it was still there and God had promised that he would strip bare the land from his people so that it could enjoy the Sabbaths that they had failed to honor upon it.

Then, in 1948, the governments of men determined to establish Israel upon the maps of men again. But the land of Israel...it was always there as far as God was concerned. God also warned Israel, the people, that the gentiles would overrun the land of Israel. Everything has gone right along as God has foretold us that it would. But that land? It's still the favored land of the world that God gave unto His people, Israel. In fact, that land will be the future home that all those who are born again will inherit. It will become a great city with 12 gates with boundaries that are 12,000 stadia square.

God bless you,
In Christ, ted

ted,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your post. You make a great teacher of these things and I pray you continue to do so.

In my view the Lord made a lot of "promises" to his children but in every case there were conditions attached. I can provide countless events from historical to current that show clearly that they have fail and continue to fail to follow those conditions and as I said I will live to see these final events.

p.s. I am 67 years old but my health is good

The Israelites lost their way, they lost sight of why they were chosen for in the first place. They were then un-chosen, the light was given to others to carry.
