Did Jesus work on the Sabbath?

People who try to refute the Sabbath, in order to justify their disobedience, will say things like, "We no longer have to remember the Sabbath because Jesus worked on the Sabbath thus making the Sabbath unemportant for Christians under the New Covenant". If this were true that would make Jesus a transgressor of the Law and thus would make Him a sinner.

1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

But those who love God and have His Spirit dwelling in them know this is so far from the truth.

So how do Sabbath refuters justify saying Jesus violated the Sabbath by working on the Sabbath?

They use verses such as Matthew 12:1-5.

Matthew 12:1-5 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, "Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!''

Here we have Jesus being accused of a Sabbath violation because they were picking grain on the Sabbath. This was considered work by the religious men of Jesus' time. But listen to how Jesus responds to their accusations.

Then Jesus said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: "how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? "Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?

Jesus' response teaches us two very important Sabbath keeping principles.

1. Anything that is done on the Sabbath that relates to taking care of a necessary need (hunger, healing, saving an animal and so on) is not a violation of the Sabbath and is not considered normal, unecessary or just everyday work.

2. Anything done on the Sabbath that relates to service to God is not a violation of the Sabbath (pot luck clean up, serving and so on).

We can also understand from the words of Jesus that these principles were not new to the New Covenant only but were also Old Covenant principles as well. The religious Jews should have known this if they were not so self-righteous and proud.

Some people tend to use a minority opinion to fabricate what others believe.

The sabbath is a ceromonial commandment. It is used to identify the Creator as the One true God.
Christian as called to know Jesus also as God the Creator and the Son of God.

When we take communion "we remember" the body and blood of Our God and Our Saviour. The father has called us into fellowship with His Son.
HELLO my SDA brothers and sisters........God Has manifested Himself to us in the flesh.

Sabbathkeeping are for those who are blinded and dont have revelation knowlege that Jesus is Our God.

Matthew 12:50 "For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.''

The will of Jesus' Father is that we keep His commandments, including remembering to keep the seventh day holy.

Exodus 20:8-10 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.

Jesus kept the Sabbath, Paul kept the Sabbath and Jesus' followers kept the Sabbath according to the commandment even after Jesus' death.

Luke 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

Jesus confirmed the Sabbath 40 years after His resurrection.

Matthew 24:20 "And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath.

Jesus Himself is Lord of THE Sabbath, which means the Sabbath is the Lord's day.

Mark 2:28 Jesus said; "I am Lord even of the Sabbath day.''

...And in that same flesh Jesus showed us that we were to honor the Father by keeping the Sabbath, a weekly memorial of creation. Even in His death Jesus 'rested' during the Sabbath hours ceasing; from all His labors on earth and in heaven.
As a former Pentecostal I joined the Adventist church a few years ago. I can say say without equivocation that until I accepted the truth of the Sabbath it was I who was blind on many biblical revelations and prophecies. I distinctly remember one of our mantras was "If Jesus said it I believe it" and "What God says is Holy, is Holy" I look back now and realize just how hypocritical my position was at the time. Thank God for His Mercy which is everlasting and His willingness to wink at the sins we commit in ignorance. God is calling on all His true-hearted followers to come out of false worship and Keep His easy to understand commandments as written... In light of what Christ did for us at the cross Paul calls it a "reasonable service". Let's quit making excuses for doing what we want because we think we know better than the Creator of the universe what is good and righteous and true.

With all due respects sir, Jesus came "under the law", this means that He lived as a Jew. The fact that Jesus taught propper application to Judaism did not require Gentile Christians to become Jewish. It is a questionable doctrine to say that we're to honor God by keeping the Sabbath. All you should do is post the scriptures for our understanding. The biblical and historical facts exposes how people reason beyond God's word.
It's is also questionable and desperate error to associate His death with a sabbath day of rest.
Some people are quick to say amen to what they want to hear. God's word does not agree with what you're saying.

From all what you've said, why is it that what Paul calls "reasonable service" have nothing to do with the sabbath? Commentary get pretty wild when we stray from the scripture...
Rom 12:1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.

Rom 12:1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.

People don't become Jews when they obey God, they become a special people.

1 Peter 2:9-10 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

How is it that we can become a special treasure, a priesthood and a holy nation? Does it happen automatically? Well let's go back to the OT where this was first mentioned and see the requirement for the royal priesthood.

Exodus 19:5-6 'Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 'And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.''

Right after this God gave the Ten Commandments for them to follow so they could become His special treasure, His holy nation and His royal priesthood.

The words of Jesus taught us how to keep the Sabbath holy. They never teach us to do away with the Sabbath nor do they teach us to change the day of the Sabbath.

All I can say to you is if you desire to worship the Beast, through your obedience to the Beast, because it's the Beast who made the Sabbath change, not God, that's your free will choice. But those of us who love God and want our worship to be of value to Him we will obey His commandments over the commandments of man.

Matthew 15:9 Their worship is worthless, for they teach their man-made laws instead of those from God.'''

Mark 7:6-7 Jesus answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: `This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'

Sorry for the confusion on this. I can see where I did not make my point regarding reasonable service. When you say Jesus came in the flesh, I agree. One reason he did so was to show us how we should live. The point was that if we are to present ourselves to God as Holy vessels because of what Christ has done for us by giving us His righteousness, It is reasonable live a Holy life that reflects His character and the life he lived on earth (including keeping the Sabbath) as he gives us the power to do so.

Perhaps there is another way to put it: For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 John 5:3)

I could not agree more. One of the reasons you may have difficulty with understanding the simple and clear truth of the 4th Commandment is you have bought into the lie of dispensationalism, which is a common error in Christianity. This "wild commentary posed barely a century ago is not found in the bible yet most are "quick to say amen to what they hear".
Please READ Hebrews 11 to understand that we are all saved by faith whether before or after the cross.
Also Romans 8 and 9 are useful to understanding that God is not arbitrary or capricious in His dealing with the hearts of men.

Thank you for the responsive dialog......... Saying that Jesus show us how to live, can be abused by some people. Yes, Jesus was obedient to all that God called Him to do. In doing so, He was an example for us to follow.
Did God call us to do what He called Jesus to do? NO!!!

Truth is, God calls people to righteousness. God dictates what is righteousness for every generation. The scriptures proves that God has called us to righteousness by faith apart from the law. (Rom3:21)
People try to confuse that issue by bringing the law into the New Covenant.
Truth is, God still calls us all to Holiness and righteousness in the Gospel.
The law only condemns people to death for the sin that the commit.
Jesus have died for sin, so we must live into Him.

I do understand the 4th commandment clearly, the question is do you?
You may recite it every Sabbath as an affirmation to keep it. But do you really apply it to understanding, knowledge and wisdom?

You may not except or understand that its states that only God rested on the seventh day of creation. Your common error is to believe that God gave man rest on the seventh day of creation. That is clearly the fudgeyou're looking for, because it contradicts what God says, and also what John and Paul have to say about what Moses wrote.

God blessed, sanctified and called holy the seventh day at creation. These are powerful words used by God to describe the seventh day. When God blesses, sanctifies and calls something holy it means it's to be used for His purpose.

Leviticus 23:3 You will work for six days, but the seventh will be a day of complete rest, a day for the sacred assembly on which you do no work at all. Wherever you live, this is a Sabbath for the LORD.

Keep studying, God will lead you into all truth.

Jesus have died for sin, so we must live into Him.

Righteousness does not change from generation to generation. (This is the teaching of 'moral relativism")

Holiness is holiness and sin is sin. God does not change; yet we attempt to change Him to fit our circumstances and selfish desires. (this is a form of 'higher criticism')

Again, read Hebrews 11 and see that we are all saved by faith in Christ and nothing else. This idea of dispensations (under the law vs. under grace) is another lie of the devil to redirect the eyes of the world away from the works of Antichrist.

Actually, the law is does much more than that.

True, there is no salvation under the law because we have all come short of the character of God. But does it follow that the law is therefore 'null and void'? Do we abolish speed limits on the freeways because no one can keep their foot off the gas?
Jesus himself said he came to magnify (or focus) on the law, not destroy it. Without the law we would have no knowledge of sin or understand our need for a Saviour. (no wonder the devil tries to change it or get us to ignore it)
But God's law is good and pure and holy and righteous and eternal and SO MUCH MORE.
It only condemns us if we either ignore it, (lawlessness) or say we need no help in keeping it, (self righteousness)

The truth you're missing is that God's rest is not the sabbath He gave for the COI to keep. Sabbath is only a sign of that rest.
Yes, God blessed and sanctified the seventh day of creation. The confusion is to think that God continued to work and rest weekly with man. The bible said God was finished, so why should we think God's rest was a weekly occurance?
Yes, God also blessed and sanctified the Sabbath when He gave it as a sign of His rest. He did not give the sabbath at creation.

Ceasing from labor is not what makes the day holy, the day is holy so we cease from labor. The day was made holy by God at creation as part of the weekly cycle and since it's holy and we still honor the weekly cycle we cease from labor on the seventh day of every week.

What-ev-er ^_^. That's what you do, but that's not scripture at all.
The day is Holy because God rested from all His work, not part of a weekly cycle;

scripture said;
Gen 2:3And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
What we know for sure is, Moses wrote that God rested on the seventh day from all His work, then He blessed and sanctified it because He had (tense) rested (double-tence)........from all His work.

God does not need to rest, God ceased His labor. Why did God cease? Because He was finished and because He was finished He blessed and sanctified the seventh day as a memorial of the fact that He was finished, in other words, His work of creating the world was done.

I'm not sure where you're from but we celebrate the Fourth of July in light of the freedom we won. How we honor the Fourth of July is by getting the day off from work to celebrate what the day represents and to spend time with friends and family.

The issue is not whether God rested every week after creation but the clear commandment that WE should rest as a memorial to the work He has done for US. The bible is replete with instruction from God for HIS PEOPLE (hopefully you are one) to continue to honor the day He created FOR US. Both blessing and curses are attached to how HIS PEOPLE treat the Sabbath. Furthermore, to say that to say that it was NOT given at creation is incorrect and unscriptural.

Please post the scriptures with commentary where the context proves the wording of Gen 2:1-3 is considered by a prophet or apostle. This textHbr 4:6 and context proves that those to whom God's rest was first preached entered not.
