Brother, may the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. The gentiles could only hear Moses, but not read the law? It seems like if they could read it, they would know the laws they were to keep in a few days at the most. United in discussing the scriptures in an edifying way!
Brother, copies of the Bible were less common than today. The Dead Sea Scrolls were a collection of copies available to the community in Qumran to hear the word of God read every Sabbath when they gathered together for worship, as was the experience of Jesus in the following passage.

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” (Luke 4:16-21 NLT)

Then it was up to each individual gentile to hear Moses read every Sabbath and then begin following the laws as they hear them?
Yes! As was the case for us when we read the following passage from Moses and there was division over what was already understood from Genesis. The majority wanted to keep a morning to morning Sabbath because of what they understood in Genesis, but those who brought up the following passage were rewarded by our prophetess' first vision confirming its truth to resist a morning to morning Sabbath.

This will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and on that day you must deny yourselves. This day of rest will begin at sundown on the ninth day of the month and extend until sundown on the tenth day.” (Leviticus 23:32 NLT)

It took eight years of division before they studied the meaning of the word "evening" to unite our people and they found "evening" to mean sundown. Our prophetess confirmed the meaning of sundown in her second vision after eight years, which also confirmed the truth in Genesis, because you can not have an "evening" without light first. The debate of when to begin the Sabbath was not settled, but our people stopped studying after her second vision. They had no reason to think the second vision settled the matter when her first vision did not, but they wrongly assumed it anyway. She was simply encouraging further study by confirming the steps we were taking in the right direction.

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was LIGHT. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and MORNING came, marking the first day. (Genesis 1:3-5 NLT)

Right, I understand that copies of the scriptures were rare and expensive. But not unknown.

Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.

I don't know how fast the synagogues in ancient times read through the law, but today it looks like it takes a year. Is that what you meant by slow growth? That within a year or two, the gentiles would know all of the laws they were to keep from Moses?

Brother, James would certainly not have been as patient as God for 2000 years. What I mean by slow growth is that under the many forgivenesses of Jesus, you can grow to obey the Eleven Commandments through practice like a child who learns to walk by getting up again and again until he no longer falls. Or as someone who wants to learn to play the piano, you learn slowly through practice thanks to Jesus' many forgivenesses for past sins in comparison to the law's unforgiving condemnation. The law does not allow slow growth through practice, but Jesus gave us what the law did not; growth in obedience to the Eleven Commandments through the practice which Paul calls slavery when he says we are "slaves to righteous living" by obeying God instead of "slaves to sin", "which leads to death".

Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living. (Romans 6:15-18 NLT)

So getting back to where we started with this train of thought in post #149
...we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.

"All the terms of these instructions..." Do I understand what you're saying right, that we are to keep all of the law of Moses today, once we hear it all? Of course, there are many forgivenesses as we slowly grow, like practicing the piano.

But we are to attempt to keep all of the law of Moses? That's generally what Messianics say. But my impression was that most people who endorse a careful keeping of the Sabbath here in this forum don't think that we are to keep all of the law of Moses.

Brother, we are to obey all that was not shadowed before Jesus gave us its reality. For example, circumcision is done by Jesus now and no longer done by humans.

When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcisionthe cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. (Colossians 2:11-12 NLT)

When it was done by humans, it was a shadow of what Jesus would do in helping separate sin from our character, which only He can do using laws because He is not a blind guide to do it through His Eleven Commandments and His death. Jesus' single death appointed Him as our High Priest to give us as much forgiveness for our past sins as we need to grow in obedience to the Eleven Commandments through a practice that Paul calls slavery, as we become "slaves to righteous living". Anything that was not a shadow replaced with its reality after Jesus is kept as written by Moses. For example, no more animal sacrifices for the forgiveness of our sins, because we are now forgiven by turning to Jesus daily in prayer for the forgiveness of our past sins to grow in obedience through practice, which allows us to deal with more sin faster than was possible before with animal sacrifices.

Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle, the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands. And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too. If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law. They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.” (Hebrews 8:1-5 NLT)

This daily worship of Jesus as our High Priest for the forgiveness of our past sins was cast down to earth in the confessional by the apostatized church in Rome as prophesied in the following passage. This is why some believe in the once saved always saved because they do not understand the daily cycle of forgiveness of our High Priest Jesus that makes possible our growth in obedience to the Eleven Commandments through practice that Paul calls slavery as we become slaves to righteous living by obeying the Eleven Commandments. Jesus serves daily as our High Priest in the heavenly temple to forgive sins. This heavenly ministry was cast down to earth by the bishops of Rome with the confessional, who were also those who were the official state church of the Roman Empire who destroyed the temple in 70 AD. The word "sacrifices" crossed out after the word "daily", is not in the original and was added to the Septuagint Hebrew to Greek translation. The translators, thinking they were helping, when Jesus' "daily" forgivenesses do not cause Him to die over and over again, to forgive our past sins when we turn daily in prayer to Jesus for the forgiveness of our past sins, like the death of so many animal sacrifices in the stand-in earthly temple "copy" before Jesus' death. Jesus' single death validates all His forgivenesses prior and subsequent to His death in his daily service as our High Priest in the heavenly temple.

It even challenged the Commander of heaven’s army by canceling the daily sacrifices offered to him and by destroying his Temple. The army of heaven was restrained from responding to this rebellion. So the daily sacrifice was halted, and truth was overthrown. The horn succeeded in everything it did. Then I heard two holy ones talking to each other. One of them asked, “How long will the events of this vision last? How long will the rebellion that causes desecration stop the daily sacrifices? How long will the Temple and heaven’s army be trampled on?” (Daniel 8:11-13 NLT)

The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.

So... Circumcision has been revealed to be a shadow. What other laws have been revealed to be a shadow? Many people say the annual feasts were a shadow, but I thought you said earlier that the feasts were something we are to do?

Many people say the annual feasts were a shadow, but I thought you said earlier that the feasts were something we are to do?
Brother, happy Sabbath, which started this Friday December 9, 2022 at 9:35 am EST! The festivals to the LORD are not a shadow because they celebrate what God has done for His people in the past, as expressed in the following passage about the LORD’s Passover. They are to be enjoyed forever by everyone, including "foreigners" who are not native-born Israelites.

“This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the LORD. This is a law for all time. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first day of the festival, remove every trace of yeast from your homes. Anyone who eats bread made with yeast during the seven days of the festival will be cut off from the community of Israel. On the first day of the festival and again on the seventh day, all the people must observe an official day for holy assembly. No work of any kind may be done on these days except in the preparation of food. “Celebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation. The bread you eat must be made without yeast from the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month until the evening of the twenty-first day of that month. During those seven days, there must be no trace of yeast in your homes. Anyone who eats anything made with yeast during this week will be cut off from the community of Israel. These regulations apply both to the foreigners living among you and to the native-born Israelites. During those days you must not eat anything made with yeast. Wherever you live, eat only bread made without yeast.” (Exodus 12:14-20 NLT)

James is telling us that the "Gentiles who are turning to God" are part of Israel as God "restores the fallen house of David" by adopting Moses as they listen to Moses every Sabbath without forcing on them the human traditions of Judaism Jesus was against.

“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either. “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are! “Blind guides! What sorrow awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the Temple.’ Blind fools! Which is more important—the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding. How blind! For which is more important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred? When you swear ‘by the altar,’ you are swearing by it and by everything on it. And when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it. And when you swear ‘by heaven,’ you are swearing by the throne of God and by God, who sits on the throne. (Matthew 23:13-22 NLT)

According to James, we are a continuation of Judaism without the added human traditions in Judaism.

When they had finished, James stood and said, “Brothers, listen to me. Peter has told you about the time God first visited the Gentiles to take from them a people for himself. And this conversion of Gentiles is exactly what the prophets predicted. As it is written: ‘Afterward I will return and restore the fallen house of David. I will rebuild its ruins and restore it, so that the rest of humanity might seek the LORD, including the Gentiles—all those I have called to be mine. The LORD has spoken—he who made these things known so long ago.’ “And so my judgment is that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from eating food offered to idols, from sexual immorality, from eating the meat of strangled animals, and from consuming blood. For these laws of Moses has been preached in Jewish synagogues in every city on every Sabbath for many generations.” (Acts 15:13-21 NLT fixed)

Brother, happy Sabbath, which ends this Saturday December 10, 2022 at 9:35 am EST! I am not celebrating the festivals yet. It's on my to-do list, I just haven't gotten that far. The next big step in our growth is to get the Sabbath right.

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. (John 16:12-14 NIV)

The Sabbath is where my focus is and not on the festivals, because I don't want to over "bear" the "Gentiles who are turning to God" possibly with more than is most important to "bear" at this stage in our growth, as mentioned by Paul in the following passage. If we do not get the Sabbath right, Paul tells us "we will fall", no such warning is given for the festivals to give them priority over the Sabbath.

So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. (Hebrews 4:6-11 NLT)

Brother, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you.

Does each Christian have their own list of laws they can bear? Or does the church as a whole have the list, and we are all to use the same list?

Brother, Jesus determines what we can bear, as He determined to correct us about the Sabbath after David and not before David, since Joshua did not give us His "day" of rest.

Sounds good. Does Jesus determine a separate list of laws that each individual can bear? Or is it the same list for the entire church? I think we talked earlier about the entire church keeping the same set of laws, so it seems like it would be one list for the whole church?

Brother, Jesus determines what we can bear for the entire church, but He has also given us a way for those who are left behind to catch up through His daily cycle of many forgivenesses for our past sins as we turn to Him daily in prayer to forgive our "sins", as expressed in the following passage. The church has people at many differnt levels in their growth, what we can espect from them is grouth over time so they end at a higher level than they started if God is working on them as the Holy Spirit reminds them of Jesus' Eleven Commandments.

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. (Matthew 6:9-15 NLT)

Okay, so... Jesus determined four laws that the entire church could bear in Acts 15. What was the next law that Jesus determined the entire church could bear after that?

Brother, the list in Acts below is not a reduction for Gentiles of what God has given from the beginning through Moses. It is permission to remove the added human traditions that Jesus is against in the following passage that have colored what God has given through Moses. Gentiles do not have the traditions of Judaism to color their adoption of Moses if those like James, who came from Judaism, do not force the adaption of Moses through Judaism when Gentiles can adapt Moses themselves while listening to Moses every Sabbath.

James believed that God will "restore the fallen house of David" through the Gentiles turning to God, who have the advantage of not having these human traditions in their background to influence their adoption of Moses, as they listen to Moses every Sabbath. The reason the list is small is because James' background is colored by the human traditions of Judaism. However, James is giving us Gentiles who are turning to God a seed to start adopting the rest of Moses. We Gentiles have the advantage of being inexperienced in Judaism to color God's instructions with the human traditions of Judaism, allowing God to "restore the fallen house of David" through us. James put too much faith in us that we have not lived up to for 2000 years.

However, James is giving us Gentiles who are turning to God a seed to start adopting the rest of Moses.
So... What was the next law that the church adapted after the seed of the four laws in Acts 15?

Brother, one of the first adoptions of Moses after Acts was the acceptance by James and those with a background in Judaism that circumcision is now done by Jesus and is no longer done by Humans.

Okay, so in that case the law was adopted by doing away with the physical requirement of it.

So we have the four laws in Acts 15, then circumcision. What was the next law to be adopted after circumcision?

Brother, the best example I have found with Paul of adopting Moses by the Gentiles turning to God, other than what is in Acts, is the tithe "on portion of the money you have earned" in the following passage. Jerusalem, where the disciples are, is the hub of the whole church.

Now regarding your question about the money being collected for God’s people in Jerusalem (added by the translators and not in the original, the collected money is for the whole church and not just for those in Jerusalem). You should follow the same procedure I gave to the churches in Galatia. Every Saturday, you should each put aside a portion of the money you have earned. Don’t wait until I get there and then try to collect it all at once. When I come, I will write letters of recommendation for the messengers you choose to deliver your bounty to Jerusalem. And if it seems appropriate for me to go along, they can travel with me. (1 Corinthians 16:1-4 NLT fixed)
