Brother, copies of the Bible were less common than today. The Dead Sea Scrolls were a collection of copies available to the community in Qumran to hear the word of God read every Sabbath when they gathered together for worship, as was the experience of Jesus in the following passage.Brother, may the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. The gentiles could only hear Moses, but not read the law? It seems like if they could read it, they would know the laws they were to keep in a few days at the most. United in discussing the scriptures in an edifying way!
When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” (Luke 4:16-21 NLT)
Yes! As was the case for us when we read the following passage from Moses and there was division over what was already understood from Genesis. The majority wanted to keep a morning to morning Sabbath because of what they understood in Genesis, but those who brought up the following passage were rewarded by our prophetess' first vision confirming its truth to resist a morning to morning Sabbath. Then it was up to each individual gentile to hear Moses read every Sabbath and then begin following the laws as they hear them?
This will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and on that day you must deny yourselves. This day of rest will begin at sundown on the ninth day of the month and extend until sundown on the tenth day.” (Leviticus 23:32 NLT)
It took eight years of division before they studied the meaning of the word "evening" to unite our people and they found "evening" to mean sundown. Our prophetess confirmed the meaning of sundown in her second vision after eight years, which also confirmed the truth in Genesis, because you can not have an "evening" without light first. The debate of when to begin the Sabbath was not settled, but our people stopped studying after her second vision. They had no reason to think the second vision settled the matter when her first vision did not, but they wrongly assumed it anyway. She was simply encouraging further study by confirming the steps we were taking in the right direction.
Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was LIGHT. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and MORNING came, marking the first day. (Genesis 1:3-5 NLT)
United in our hope for the soon return of Jesus, Jorge
