• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Es tut mir Leid. Meine deutch ist nicht gut. Ich habe eine jahre deutch im der Schule...so, I will write my question in English and run it through an internet translator and hope that everyone understands. :prayer:

I have an Austrian friend that is very dear to me. She has been a Christian for a few years and has been going back and forth between an English language Touchpoint Bible and a German language Bible that is made for children or teens.

She is in need of a German language study Bible but I have no idea what translations (like our NIV, KJV, NAS, etc.) are out there for Germans and wouldn't be able to identify a good study Bible in that language because of my language barrier.

Can you please recommend a publisher of a good German language study bible that is in today's German?

Thank you and if someone can make a better translation than the internet translator gave me, feel free. Also, a brief response in English would really help me.

God bless you all!

Well, there are varying degrees of "study" bibles. Most have in depth maps and chronologies. They have introductions to each book and footnotes about most scriptures. Of course, cross-reference, some have bible study lessons. The english language ones are usually called "study bible." Kind of like you have Devotional Bibles and Children's Bibles and Men's Bibles, etc. Each publisher has different ones that go more or less in depth than other ones.

I'd like one that explains what was meant in various passages or tells about who was being spoken to.

Hm. Sorry, that is beyond my field of expertise. I always was able to get reference material when I needed it beyond my bible.

I guess that your Austrian friend is currently not living in Austria and can just go and visit a Christian bookstore?

edit: amazon.de listed quite a number of entries for "Studienbibel"... but of course I could not say what each edition offers.

the only german study bibles like that use the luther text from the revision in 1984 - but that teyt is still pretty much like KJV would be for modern day British people...so it's rather hard to understand....the most popular one is the Thompson Studienbibel....the only other one I know of is the MacArthur Studienbibel (I think it also uses Luther :sorry: )...other than that study bibles are really something that's missing in German :( there aren't really as many different ones for all age groups and so on as you have in English - I hope one day there will be more....

but there are books about the bible that sort of look at each book of the bible in more depth - like the wupperthaler studienbibel...but they are really expensive since they constist of lots of independet volumes (sort of one volume for each book) - but you can buy the individual volumes as well...

as for bibles as I said Luther is rather hard to understand....we've also got the equivalent to your good nes bible called Gute Nachricht (which is a bit easier), one called Hoffnung für alle (easy to understand but not as cloes to the original wording) and the equivalent of the New Living Translation - neues Leben (if you ask me they transalted that one from the English one - same as with the Good News - cause the grammar and sentence structure is more or less similar to the English version)...

there are a few not so well known translations as well - but I don't know that much about those :sorry:

if she wants to try out which translation would be best for her I suggest reading a passge she knows well in all of them and then deside :)

ask her wether there is a Christian Book store near where she lives - I know there aren't many of those in Austria but it's worth a try since they are usually quite good at helping you choose the right one for you....

if she's got internet access I suggest having a look on this site which does not only have a lot of the German translations on (you can read them paralell as well) but also a few commentaries and other stuff :)

blessings <><

By sheer coincidence I was confronted with an ad for the 2008 complete edition of the Wuppertaler Studienbibel, published by the renowned German encyclopedia publisher Brockhaus. It is said to be quite a buy for 180€.

Perhaps your friend could read some of the comments on Amazon or similar sites and check it out?

Of course, getting competent and personal help in a bookstore would be better.

Gibt es da wirklich so wenige in Östereich, Ainuhina? Ich kenne alleine in Nürnberg mindestens vier.

yep...there is at least one in Vienna...one in Linz, one in Wels and one in Graz....there might be a few others that I do not know off...and there's a few catholic ones as well :)

I only happen to know so much cause I was working in one for 1 1/2 years :)

180 Euros doesn't seem too bad to me....

For a general purpose Bible that reads nicely, I like the Einheitsuebersetzung, originally a project of both the Protestant and Catholic churches, but I think the Protestants dropped out after the New Testament was finished, I don't really know the history here. But I do like the translation.

If you want a very literal, wooden translation like the Revised Standard Version or the New American Standard Version, the Elberfelder is nice.

Gute Nachricht is translated from the American "Good News Bible", but I don't think it's as good.

I have another good link where your friend can buy a Bible, it is Weltbild. She can get there every translation the other posters listed. And she will also find for sure a Weltbild shop in her heighborhood.
I hope this helps you.

Hi Becky,
