DeSantis forms panel to counter CDC, a move decried by health professionals

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday that he is forming a new state committee to counter policy recommendations from federal health agencies — a decision that medical professionals said will further politicize medicine in the Sunshine State.

At a news conference in South Florida, DeSantis also said he is requesting a statewide grand jury investigation into alleged “crimes and wrongdoing” related to the coronavirus vaccine. He provided few details on what specifically he wants a panel to probe, but in a press release, his office noted side effects like myocarditis, a type of heart inflammation, that have been observed in rare cases.

“In Florida, you know, it is against the law to mislead and to misrepresent, particularly when you’re talking about the efficacy of a drug,” DeSantis said.

The governor said the new public health committee will be led by Ladapo, who has recommended against vaccinating children for covid and questioned the efficacy of the vaccines for anyone but the elderly.

Ladapo ... said the state would work with the University of Florida to study autopsy results in cases of “sudden deaths of individuals that received the COVID-19 vaccine in Florida.”

Large-scale observational studies on hundreds of millions of vaccine recipients have shown that while heart inflammation can be a rare side effect of the messenger RNA vaccines that disproportionately affect young men, with a small number of deaths in that age group, the protective effects of the vaccines at preventing severe covid outweigh those risks, experts at the American College of Cardiology concluded.

May his words come back to land him in jail.

We should have listened to Joe Biden when he told us the vaccine was unsafe.

The same University of Florida that tried to prevent its professors from testifying in the voting rights lawsuit...will their employment be tied to how much their findings support the governor's agenda?

In other news, Florida is changing state rules on tenure.

GainesvilleSun said:
In January, the Florida Board of Governors will meet to discuss the passing of the new rule. If passed, faculty members say it will pave the way for removing staff if their research is deemed controversial.

CRT is targeted, but who's to say that covid/vaccine research won't also be controlled.

This man needs to be taken down a peg or two...or twenty.

He acts like a petty dictator leading by edicts and intimidation to eliminate his enemies.

He is the antithesis of a democratic leader. Voters beware

We should have listened to Joe Biden when he told us the vaccine was unsafe.
Unsafe only in the sense of not adequately tested. And of course, it is no longer 'last year' by well over a year.

Thay were talking about the situation back when Trump was president and was pushing for an inadequately tested vaccine to be released in time to help his campaign,

I would not have refused the vaccine at that point. I would have asked several physicians I know, and then refused. (I talked to a couple of them after they fact and they said they did not trust government approval at that time because of undue pressure applied by Trump).

Isn't that the goal of a move like this? Politicize basically everything.

He didn't say the vaccine was unsafe, not even in the video you posted.
I swear people can listen to the same exact words and hear two different things.

""DeSantis made the announcements during a roundtable discussion featuring coronavirus vaccine skeptics. Among the speakers were doctors and researchers who had signed the Great Barrington Declaration, a statement released in 2020 that advocated against covid restrictions and in support of herd immunity. The declaration is not a scientific document, and critics have pointed out it presents no data.""

...does he really want the nation to reexamine how he, as governor, responded to COVID?

DeSantis is trying to please the Quanon anti-vaccine people by calling for an investigation.

The commonly prescribed statin Atorvastatin may reduce risk of fatal heart disease in older people. It has a number of known serious side effects, but is commonly prescribed.

From the British National Health Service: Atorvastatin NHS.UK guidelines

“Stop taking atorvastatin and contact 111 or call your doctor if:
  • you get unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness or cramps – these can be signs of muscle breakdown and kidney damage
  • the whites of your eyes turn yellow, or your skin turns yellow, although this may be less obvious on brown or black skin, or if you have pale poo and dark pee – these can be signs of liver problems
  • you get a skin rash with pink or red blotches, especially on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet – this could be a sign of erythema multiforme
  • you have severe stomach pain – this can be a sign of acute pancreatitis
  • you have a cough, feel short of breath, and are losing weight – this can be a sign of lung disease”

DeSantis reverses himself on coronavirus vaccines, moves to right of Trump

In a potential wedge issue for the 2024 primary, DeSantis is attacking the life-saving covid shots he once praised and promoted

Early in the pandemic, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis repeatedly praised President Donald Trump for the expedited development and rollout of a coronavirus vaccine. The governor’s office pushed for $480 million in pandemic resources, including media campaigns promoting the shots, according to state budget documents. And DeSantis, a Republican, even lauded the Biden administration for helping to expand access to vaccines.

“We’re having more vaccine because of this, which is great,” DeSantis said of a federal program shipping shots to pharmacies in February 2021.
But this past week, DeSantis threw himself into misleadingly disparaging the vaccines, convening skeptics to buck guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and seeking to investigate vaccine makers for fraud.

“We know he’s not really anti-vax, he’s on the record, but now he’s taking this position for really blatant political purposes, it appears, and it’s really undermining to health care professionals,” said David Pate, a retired health systems executive and lifelong Republican who has advised Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R). “I’m not sure what the gain is, because he’s already got the base, and now this is just going to alienate moderates and independents.”

Asking for more investigative medical research is not asking for a ban on vaccines. DeSantis and Trump supported COVID vaccinations during the pandemic. Trump called vaccine development, “Operation Warp Speed.” I live in a 55+ community. Democrats and Republicans were making vaccination appointments at pharmacies. Young adults had a lower COVID mortality rate and did not get vaccinated. COVID 19 mutated into Omicron with a much lower mortality rate. People stopped wearing masks.

The anti-abortion fanatics spread a rumor that vaccines are made from aborted fetal tissue, thus they should not get vaccinated. That resulted in the loss of many lives. The original tissue multiplies like yeast. They do not need new abortions to generate more stem cell tissue. Besides there are so many miscarriages, new tissue is available. It is like people sign up to donate their eyes and organs before they die without suffering nightmares.

Desantis gets his grand jury.

The Florida Supreme Court has approved Gov. Ron DeSantis’ petition to, and now ordered the state to, empanel a grand jury with the purpose of investigating alleged harms from the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines produced by Pfizer and Moderna.

In addition to the petition for a grand jury, DeSantis announced the creation of a new health advisory committee in the state, called the Public Health Integrity Committee, to be led by Ladapo, with board members to include:
  • Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD lockdown opposer
  • Martin Kuldorff, PhD lockdown opposer
  • Tracy Beth Høeg, MD, PhD COVID vaccine opposer
  • Joseph Fraiman, MD unvaccinated lockdown opposer
  • Christine Stabell Benn, MD, PhD vaccine questioner
  • Bret Weinstein, PhD unvaccinated ivermectin proponent
  • Steven Templeton, PhD "Children are so low risk," Templeton said, "that they shouldn't be quarantined at all."
Just a random assortment of unbiased medical experts.
